Annual World of Work Seminars

The Placement and Career Services will host Seminar 6 of its Annual World of Work Seminars on Thursday, November 17, 2005 at 3:00 p.m. in the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre. Registration begins at 2:45 p.m. The topic will be Financing Your Business – A Dream Becomes Reality and the presenter will be Ms. Audrey Morris, Chief Officer – Trade Financing and Risks Management Division, National Export – Import Bank of Jamaica. Completed portfolios will be collected at the final seminar scheduled for November 24, 2005.

Professor Kamau Brathwaite launches New Book

Celebrated Caribbean Poet and Historian, Prof. Kamau Brathwaite will launch a new book by Clinton Hutton, “The Logic and Historical Significance of the Haitian Revolution and the Cosmological Roots of Haitian Freedom,” at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts, UWI Mona Campus on Friday, November 18, beginning at 5:00 p.m. The book takes a philosophical look at the Haitian Revolution and its fundamental contribution to the agency of freedom and justice in the culture of modern civilization.

Training Institute on Climate and Health

Some fifty participants and speakers from Latin America and the Caribbean are now attending a Training Institute on Climate and Health in the Americas in the Department of Physics at the UWI Mona Campus. The Training Institute is being run by the Inter American Institute for Global Change Research and continues through to Friday, November 18.

Derek Gordon Seminar

The 10th Annual Derek Gordon Seminar, under the theme “Social Stratification and Exclusion,” will be held on November 19, 2005 commencing at 9:00 a.m. in the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre.
The seminar is a major highlight in the department’s calendar, which has as its primary objective, the showcasing of quality, scholarly, graduate work and research.

The UWI Alumni Association will be having its 1980's Reunion Breakfast. Biennial UWI/Guardian Life Premium Award

The Instructional Development Uunit (IDU) is now accepting applications for the Biennial UWI/Guardian Life Premium Teaching Award. This award seeks to encourage and reward excellence in teaching on the Mona Campus of the UWI. The award is granted on the evaluation of a teaching portfolio, which is the instrument by which the awardee(s) is/are selected. The teaching portfolios of applicants will be assessed on the following criteria: teaching philosophy, teaching responsibilities and evidence of effective teaching prospective.

Book Launch

The Department of Literatures in English in association with the University of the West Indies Press will host the launch of the new book by Curdella Forbes "From Nation to Diaspora: Samuel Selvon, George Lamming and the Cultural Performance of Gender", on Monday, November 7, 2005 in the Multi-Functional Room of the Main Library at 6:00 p.m.

Examination Cards are now Ready

Candidates writing examinations during December 2005 are requested to collect their examination cards at the Dramatic Theatre from Monday, November 14 to Friday, November 18, from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. each day. Candidates in the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences may collect their cards on Monday; those in the Faculty of Humanities and Education should collect their cards on Tuesday; Social Sciences students should make their collection on Wednesday and those in the Faculty of Medical Sciences may collect their examination cards on Thursday.

IDU Workshop – Course Design

The IDU will host the first session in Course Design on Wednesday, November 9 between 5:00 - 6:30 p.m. This session will be repeated on Thursday, November 10 between 2:30 – 4:00 p.m.
Both sessions are open to members of the academic and senior administrative staff and will be held in the IDU’s Training Room (upstairs the Inter-Faculty Lecture Theatre).
