Professor Archibald McDonald – New Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences

The Medical Faculty at the UWI, Mona Campus has a new Dean. He is Professor Archibald McDonald, Specialist in Trauma and Professor of Surgery and Emergency Medicine. Professor McDonald was appointed Dean effective August 2005, having previously served as Head of the Department of Surgery, Radiology, Anaesthetics and Intensive Care since August 2002. Professor McDonald is a graduate of Meadowbrook High School and did both Undergraduate and Post Graduate Medical and Surgical Training at the UWI, Mona.

“Patwa” - Official Language in Jamaican Schools?

The Jamaican Language Unit in the Department of Language, Linguistics and Philosophy at the University of the West Indies, Mona has just completed an island-wide survey of language attitudes across Jamaica. The survey sample was 1,000 men and women between the ages of 18 – 80+ years, from rural and urban centres in 3 regions of the country (western, central, eastern). The survey indicates that the majority of Jamaicans recognise Jamaican patwa as a language and contend that Ministers of Government should deliver speeches in patwa.

Bilingual Education Project

The Jamaican Language Unit in the Department of Language, Linguistics and Philosophy at the UWI Mona Campus is now engaged in a Bilingual Education Project, which is aimed at increasing literacy among elementary school children in three project schools. The overall goal of the project is to achieve improved performance and competence in Maths, Science and Social Studies as well as fluency in Language use of Jamaican and English.

Book Launch

The Jamaica Historical Society and the Archaeological Society of Jamaica will host the Launch of the Book ‘Gone is the Ancient Glory: Spanish Town, Jamaica, 1554 -2000 by Dr. James Robertson on Thursday, November 3 from 6.00 p.m. in the Multifunctional Room of the Main Library. The book is published by Ian Randle Publishers. Members of the public are invited to attend.

Book Launch - Images of Psychiatry

The Department of Community Health and Psychiatry will launch the book ‘Images of Psychiatry – The Caribbean’ on Thursday, November 3 in the gold room of the Mona visitors’ lodge and conference centre, beginning at 10 a.m. The book is edited by Professor Frederick Hickling of the Section of Psychiatry at the UWI Mona Campus and Professor Eliot Sorel of George Washington University. The publication will be launched by chancellor of the UWI, Professor Sir George Alleyne who also wrote the foreword to the book.

Certificate Course in Webpage Design

The Mona Institute of Applied Sciences is currently enrolling students for the certificate course in Webpage Design. This course instructs students on website creation, modification and maintenance.
As a result, graduates of the course are capable of producing websites that are functional, efficient and visually appealing. The course will begin in January 2006 and will run for twelve weeks. Culturama

Members of Irvine Hall will once again stage the Hall’s Premier Cultural Event ‘Culturama beginning this Sunday, October 30 at 7.00 p.m. The theme of this year’s celebration is ‘Extracting the Jewels from the Caribbean through a Cultural Explosion’. The activities continue until Thursday, November 3 and will include the Sir Frank Worrell Memorial Lecture on Monday, October 31 at 7.00 p.m. in the Irvine Hall Dining Room, the Island Queen Competition and Block Costume Competition on Tuesday, November 1 and the Song Competition and ‘Nyam up Nite on Wednesday, November 2.

Presentation of Graduates Ceremonies

The Presentation of Graduates Ceremonies for 2005 Graduates will be held on Friday November 4 and Saturday November 5, 2005 at 5:30 p.m. as follows: On Friday graduates of the Faculties of Humanities & Education & Higher Degrees, Law, Pure & Applied Sciences & Higher Degrees, Science & Agriculture & Higher Degrees and Engineering will be presented. On Saturday the Faculties of Medical Sciences & Higher Degrees and Social Sciences & Higher Degrees will be presented.

Professor Trevor Munroe to receive Honorary Doctoral Degree

Professor in the Department of Government in the UWI’s Faculty of Social Sciences, Trevor Munroe is to receive an Honorary Doctoral Degree from Florida International University during that University’s fall commencement exercises to take place on Monday December 19 at its Main Campus in Miami. The award is in recognition of Professor Munroe’s long-standing involvement with Labour Unions and his contribution to strengthening Jamaica’s system of governance.
