Caribbean Journal of Education-Call for Papers
The School of Education invites the submission of papers for the Caribbean Journal of Education for a special issue on Language Use and the Jamaican Education System by January 30, 2007. Papers should focus on the Jamaican Creole and the Jamaican English Language usage and the implications for the education system under seven specified sub themes.

Centre for Gender and Development Studies Course Offering
The Centre for Gender and Development Studies, Mona Unit through the Department of Language, Linguistics and Philosophy offers the Philosophy of Gender (GS 35A) in Semester two. Mona GeoInformaticS Training Schedule
Mona GeoInformaticS (MonaGIS) is offering Introductory and Advanced GIS training courses at the Mona Informatix Ltd facility, UWI. Classes will run from January 15 and end February 22, 2007. Other introductory course offerings include Introduction to Cartography and 3D Spatial Modeling Module.

Office Closure
The UWI Press and the Faculty of Humanities and Education Dean’s office wishes to advise the university community and public that their offices will be closed on Friday, December 18 at 1 pm and 2:30 pm respectively to facilitate employees attendance at staff functions.
Sincerest apologies are expressed for any inconvenience caused. Operation will be back to normal on Monday, December 18.
Office Closures
During this festive season various offices will be closed for a portion of the day to facilitate staff functions. To date, the schedule is as follows:
Monday, December 18:
• The Institute of Education, Radio Education Unit (REU) and The Institutional Advancement Division (IAD) will be closed as at 12 noon,
• The Office of the Vice Chancellor, Office of Administration and Institutional Advancement Division will be closed at 1:00 pm,
• The University Health Centre closes at 3:00 pm. In the case of emergencies please contact the University Hospital of the West Indies
Perinatal Conference 2007
The Department of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Child Health, UWI, Mona will host its Perinatal Conference 2007 under the theme “Perinatal Nutrition” from February 9-10, 2007. The keynote address will be given by Professor Allan Jackson on ‘Long term effects of impaired in utero nutrition.’ There will also be workshops covering several topics including: Breastfeeding, Maternal Nutrition hosted by Caribbean Food and Nutrition Institute and Obesity in pregnancy.
Research Fellowships
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in collaboration with the Japan Funds-in-Trust Project, is now offering twenty (20) research fellowships. Application closes Friday, December 29.

Teaching Skills Workshop
The Instructional Development Unit (IDU) invites members of the academic and senior administrative staff to participate in its annual 3-day Teaching Skills Workshop to be held from Tuesday January 9 – Thursday January 11, 2007 at the IDU Training Room from 9:00 a.m. to 4: 30 pm daily.

The Campus Registrar’s Award
The Campus Registrar’s Award will be presented at the annual Registry Christmas Luncheon being held on Monday, December 19 at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre. The award is given to member/s of the Registry’s Administrative, Technical and Service Staff to recognize excellence in the following areas: service, initiative, productivity or a combination of at least two of these areas.
