CHAMPION DEBATER IS CAVE HILL’S INAUGURAL AMBASSADOR

The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill campus has named O’Neil Simpson its 2006 Ambassador to represent the campus in a number of regional and international meetings and fora. The award, given for the first time in the campus’ history, recognizes Simpson’s stellar achievements as a student leader and in becoming the 2006 World’s Individual Public Speaking Champion at the World’s Universities and Colleges Debating Championships in Dublin, Ireland earlier this year.

Fourth Pan Commonwealth Forum on Open Learning

Prime Minister of Jamaica, the Most Hon. Portia Simpson Miller, will be guest speaker at the opening ceremony of the Fourth Pan Commonwealth Forum on Open Learning (PCF4), to be held at the Sunset Jamaica Grande, Ocho Rios,
Ocho Rios, October 30 - November 3.

FYE Programme Hosts Presentation on National and Regional Identity

All first year students are invited to attend an event organized by the First Year Experience programme on National and Regional Identity presented by Professor the Honourable, Rex Nettleford, Vice Chancellor Emeritus, UWI. This event will take place the C5 Lecture Theatre on Thursday, October 19 at 1:00 p.m.

Graduate Studies Seminar

The School of Education will be hosting graduate studies seminars on Thursday, October 26 and November 9 in the New Education Lecture Theatre (NELT) at 2 pm. The topics being featured are: Discussion of Findings and Recommendations and Ethics in Research. The presenter for these sessions is Dr. Barbara Matalon. All postgraduate students are invited to attend.

IRVINE HALL HOMECOMING

The Irvine Hall Homecoming Committee presents a grand reunion from Friday, October 20 to Sunday, October 22. The weekend will have varying activities including a Reception on Friday, October 20 at 7pm in the Irving Hall Dining Room and a Family Fun Day on Saturday, October 21 at the Mona Bowl starting at 9 am. This will be followed by a Dinner at 7 pm at the Assembly Hall, UWI Mona where the Honourable Patrick Manning, Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago will be the Guest Speaker. On Sunday, October 22 there will be a Culturama Opening Ceremony at 7 pm at the BCD Quadrangle, Irvine Hall.

LACC Film Series

The Film Cycle for the 2006/7 academic year, organized by the Latin American- Caribbean Centre (LACC), continues on Wednesday, October 18 at 7:00 p.m. in the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1), Faculty of Humanities and Education of The University of the West Indies, Mona. The film to be shown is “Whisky Romeo Zulu”, directed by Enrique Pineyro, and is presented courtesy of the Embassy of Argentina in Kingston. The film has English subtitles and lasts 105 minutes. Admission is free. All are invited.

PENTECOST 2006

The new start date for Pentecost 2006 is Sunday, October 15 and will run over a four weeks period. The series may be downlinked at the Old Dramatic Theatre.
Pentecost 2006 will be held at the Police Officers Club on 34 Hope Road, Kingston 10 with Evangelist Fitz Henry. The city-wide evangelistic series is organized by the East Jamaica Conferences of Seventh-Day Adventists in collaboration with the Adventists lay-persons Services and Industries (ASI).

PhD STUDENT CHOSEN BY CAS TO REPRESENT CAMPUS

Nadale Downer-Riley, a PhD student in the Department of Chemistry in the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences was chosen by the Caribbean Academy of Sciences (CAS) to represent the UWI Mona Campus at the 56th meeting of Nobel Laureates, held in Lindau, Germany earlier this year,. This is the 18th assembly in Chemistry and featured eighteen laureates in Chemistry, three in Physics and two in Physiology/Medicine among over five hundred scientists from forty-eight countries. The opportunity was made possible with the support of the CAS and UNESCO.

Study Skills Workshops

The Counselling Service Unit of the University Health Centre offers the last workshop in its six part series workshop on Study Skills aimed at improving students’ academic performance and assisting them in better coping with the various pressures of campus life. This session takes place on Thursday, October 19 at 2 pm in the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1) in the Faculty of Humanities and Education. The topic is Test Taking Skills.

Submission of Abstracts for Paper and Poster Presentations

The Jamaica Institute of Environmental Professionals is inviting the submission of abstracts for paper and poster presentations at the third National Conference on the Environment. These abstracts or poster presentations should highlight the following areas: Energy and the Environment, Industry and the Environment, Tourism and the Environment, Trade and the Environment, Agriculture and the Environment, Social Environmental Responsibility, Legal and policy Framework or Investment in the Environment.
