Graduate Training Workshop

The Jamaican Language Unit, Department of Language Linguistics and Philosophy invites all postgraduate students to participate in a series of Graduate Training Workshops. These workshops are divided into four stages and are designed to address various issues involved in conducting research and writing. Stage one workshops are designed to assist postgraduate researchers in the planning and design of their research.

Health Behaviour Survey - UWI Mona

A survey on health-related behaviours of the student population is currently underway on The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus. This project is being conducted as part of the Wellness Programme at UWI, through the Health Centre. This survey seeks to gather data which will inform the development of programmes for student populations.
Students from all faculties have been randomly selected from the list of students registered in the 2006/07 academic year.

JUNIOR DANCE THEATRE

The UWI Dance Society will conduct a registration session on Saturday September 23, at 9.30 a.m. in the Dance Studio at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts (PSCCA) for children between the age of four and sixteen years. Classes will begin on the same day. Children between four and nine years will have class from 10 am to 11 am while ten to sixteen year olds will have class between 11:00 a.m. and 12 noon.

LACC FILM CYCLE

The first film showing for the 2006/7 academic year, organized by the Latin American Caribbean Centre (LAAC) will be on Wednesday, September 27 at 7:00 p.m. in the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1), Faculty of Humanities and Education of The University of the West Indies, Mona. The Film “Breath of Life" ("Soplo de Vida") is directed by Luis Ospina, and presented courtesy of the Embassy of Colombia in Kingston. The film is presented with English subtitles and lasts 110 minutes. The admission is free. Wine served from 6.30 p.m.

Research and Publications and Graduate Awards Application Opens

Applications are now being invited for Research and Publications and Graduate awards. The application forms are available at www.mona.uwi.edu\postgrad for downloading. Completed application forms should be submitted by Tuesday, September 26. An electronic copy should be submitted at postgrad@uwimona.edu.jm along with two hard copies signed by the Head of Department and Supervisor.

Study Skills Workshop

The Counselling Service Unit of the University Health Centre continues its six part series workshop on Study Skills aimed at improving students’ academic performance and assisting them in better coping with the various pressures of campus life. These sessions take place each Thursday at 2:00 p.m. in the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1) in the Faculty of Humanities and Education. This week’s seminar focuses on Improving your Memory and Concentration. It will be held on Thursday, September 28.

UWI Panoridim Celebrates 30 Years

The UWI Panoridim Steel Orchestra celebrates its 30th Anniversary with a week of activities at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus from October 1-7. The celebrations will begin with a church service at the UWI Chapel on Sunday, October 1 at 7:15 am. The official opening and launch of the week’s celebration will feature an exhibition on the same day at 10 am in the Phillip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts (PSCCA). The exhibition will be open for viewing until Saturday, October 7.

UWI Press Great Book Sale

The University of the West Indies Press will host a Great Book Sale from September 25 – 27 at the Assembly Hall, UWI Mona from 10.00 a.m. to 7.00 p.m.

UWI Press launches A to Z Industrial Relations in the Caribbean Workplace

The University of the West Indies Press, will launch its new publication A to Z of Industrial Relations in the Caribbean Workplace by George J. Phillip and Benthan H. Hussey on Wednesday, September 27 in the Assembly Hall, UWI, Mona at 6:00 p.m. The book is a revision and expansion of the earlier successful publication of A–Z of Industrial Relations Practices at the Workplace and now includes a selection of industrial relations cases from Barbados, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago, suitably summarized and organized.

UWI Sociologist , Dr. Leith Dunn Named to Commonwealth Observer Group for Zambia Elections

UWI sociologist and international development consultant, Dr. Leith Dunn, has been named a member of the Commonwealth Observer Group for the Presidential, Parliamentary and Local Government Elections to be held in Zambia this month.
