UWI/Guardian Life Limited Premium Teaching Award

The second UWI/Guardian Life Limited Premium Teaching Award will be held on Wednesday, October 18 at the Gold Room at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre at 6:00 p.m. Dr. Tomlin Paul, lecturer in the Department of Community Health and Psychiatry in the Faculty of Medical Sciences, UWI, Mona the recipient for this year’s award, along with the nominees will receive their award at this event.
The UWI/Guardian Life Limited Premium Teaching Award aims at enhancing the teaching/ learning process while simultaneously recognizing the accomplishments of outstanding educators.

‘After Mrs. Rochester’ - A Play about West Indian Writer Jean Rhys

After Mrs. Rochester’ opens at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts, UWI, Mona on Friday, October 13 at 8 pm and plays for eight performances only until October 22. Performances take place on October13-14 at 8:00 p.m and 15 -16 at 6 pm as well as October 19 - 21 at 8:00 p.m. and October 22 at 6:00 p.m. ‘After Mrs. Rochester’ is a celebrated Polly Teale’s play which looks at a complex and exhilarating study of the life of one of the West Indies’ most distinguished literary personalities, the Dominican writer Jean Rhys.

Caribbean Child Research Conference 2006

The Caribbean Child Research Conference will be held on October 25-26, at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel. The conference is organized by Sir Arthur Lewis Institute for Social and Economic Studies (SALISES) and the Caribbean Child Development Centre (CCDC), in association with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), along with the Early Childhood Commission, the Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ), the Child Development Research Group and the Ministries of Education and Youth, and Health.

Condolence

The University community regrets to hear of the recent passing of Roland Christopher Jung in Kentville, Nova Scotia. Dr. Jung was a graduate of Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of the West Indies, Mona, Class of 1975. He was a pathologist and Director of Medical Laboratories at both the Valley and Yarmouth Regional Hospitals in Nova Scotia. He was also a member of Medical Society of Nova Scotia, CMA.

Faculty of Medical Sciences Hosts its 15th Annual Research Conference

The Faculty of Medical Sciences hosts its 15th Annual Research Conference between November 15 and 17 at the Main Medical Library Lecture Theatre, UWI, Mona under the theme: “Drug Development from Natural Products: Past, Present and Future.” The Conference is aimed at showcasing the research of the Medical Faculty and to provide a forum to share and explore developments in health research with members of the medical community, decision-making bodies and the wider communities.

Graduate Studies Seminar

The School of Education will be hosting graduate studies seminars on Thursday, October 26 and November 9 in the New Education Lecture Theatre (NELT) at 2 pm. The topics being featured are: Discussion of Findings and Recommendations and Ethics in Research. The presenter for these sessions is Dr. Barbara Matalon. All postgraduate students are invited to attend.

Hurricane Tips

The season wears on, and we have had a close call, but not yet being hit with a hurricane. We are not out of the woods yet as the season continue through to November. Here are a few tips on what to do during a hurricane.
• Stay calm, and be alert during the hurricane.
• Do not go outside during the hurricane, unless it is absolutely necessary. Flying objects may hit you and can cause serious injury or loss of life.
• Keep your radios on and listen for the latest information and bulletins.
• Ensure that your refrigerated food items are used up in order to avoid spoilage.

Intercollegiate Sports Awards

The Jamaica Inter-Collegiate Sports Association hosts its annual Awards Ceremony on Friday, October 6, at the Rex Nettleford Multi-Purpose Hall at 7:00 p.m. The theme for the 2006/7 academic year is ‘Inter-Col Sports: Creating Opportunities in the 21st Century and Beyond.’
The Guest Speaker is Gary Allen, General Manager, RJR Communications Group. All UWI, students who participated in the Inter-Collegiate competitions during the academic year 2005/6 are asked to attend. For more information please call the Sports Office at 702-4473/935-8229 or extension 2229.

Peer Support Providers Week

The Peer Support Providers (formerly known as the Peer Counsellors) will be having a week of activities from October 9-13. The highlight of the week is a presentation done in collaboration with the University Health Centre Education Committee entitled "A Cry for Help: Helping Someone who has Suicidal Feelings" at the Undercroft, UWI, Mona on Thursday, October 12 at 1 pm. The presentation is designed to assist individuals in helping others cope with suicidal feelings.

Security Tips

 Always lock your car doors.
 Always roll car windows up tight.
 Never leave valuables in vehicles (especially hand bags, money, cell phone, lap-tap and other equipment).
 Place valuables in car trunks before coming on campus.
 Avoid carrying cellular phones openly on the outer parts of clothing or on a neck strap.
 Avoid walking and talking on the phone as you move about in public places since this may reduce your awareness of your surroundings and give perpetrators an opportunity to identify victims with expensive phones.
