NEW DELI OPENS ON CAMPUS

The Business Development Office of The University of the West Indies announces the opening of “Deli Express”, located near the Faculty of Social Sciences, (formerly “Submerge”) on Monday, October 30.

The menu will include deli style sandwiches, salads, assorted fruit juices, hot beverages, pastries, omelettes and pancakes.

PRIME MINISTER OF JAMAICA OPENS FOURTH PAN COMMONWEALTH FORUM

Prime Minister of Jamaica, the Most Honourable Portia Simpson Miller, will be guest speaker at the opening ceremony of the Fourth Pan Commonwealth Forum on Open Learning (PCF4), to be held at the Sunset Jamaica Grande, Ocho Rios, October 30-November 3, 2006.

UWI GRADUATION ONE STOP CENTRE OPENS

The University of the West Indies in its commitment to student centredness opens its 2006 “One Stop Graduation Centre” in the Assembly Hall at UWI, Mona from Monday, October 30 to Tuesday, November 7 from Mondays-Fridays: 9 am to 7 pm and Saturday, November 4, 10 am to 5 pm. The Centre will allow graduands to make payment for graduation, take photographs and order memorabilia items in one stop.

UWI LIBRARIAN ASSISTS IN IMPLEMENTING E-LIBRARY DISASTER SYSTEM

Beverley Lashley, Librarian/Coordinator of the Caribbean Disaster Information Network (CARDIN) at the UWI Science Library will assist the Secretariat of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Environmental and Sustainable Development Unit, St Lucia in setting up their e-Library Disaster System. The Library has consented to release her for the period October 22-27, 2006, initially.

UWI PUBLIC RELATIONS STUDENTS STAGE EXPO

Over 200 students from high schools across the island have been invited to benefit from the advice and knowledge they will receive from this year’s Public Relation Expo, slated to be held at The Undercroft of the University of the West Indies’ Senate Building on Thursday, November 16. The Expo is being staged by Advanced Public Relations Students at the Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC) under the theme “PR: Paving the Way Forward.”

Annual Lupus Symposium

The Annual Symposium of the Lupus Foundation will be held on Sunday, October 29 at 1 pm at the Hilton Kingston Hotel located at 77 Knutsford Boulevard. The theme for the symposium is “You Are Not Alone.” Guest speakers at the event will be Dr. Karel DeCeulaer, Consultant Rheumatologist and President of the Lupus Foundation and Dr. Hugh Vaughan, Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon who will share on Arthritis and Lupus Eye Complications respectively. Additionally, Professor Graham Hughes, Director of the Lupus Unit, St. Thomas’ Hospital, London will deal with New Developments in SLE.

ANNUAL WORLD OF WORK SEMINARS

The Office of Placement and Career Services presents its Annual World of Work Seminars from period October 12, 2006 to November 23, 2006 over seven consecutive Thursdays at 3 pm.
The series of seminars focus on assisting students (prospective employees) to develop skills and competencies needed to enhance their academics in order to be successful in the world of work.

CARIBBEAN CHILD RESEARCH CONFERENCE 2006

The Caribbean Child Research Conference will be held from Wednesday to Thursday, October 25-26, at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel. The conference is organized by Sir Arthur Lewis Institute for Social and Economic Studies (SALISES) and the Caribbean Child Development Centre (CCDC), in association with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), along with the Early Childhood Commission, the Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ), the Child Development Research Group and the Ministries of Education and Youth, and Health.

GRADUATE STUDIES SEMINAR

The School of Education will be hosting graduate studies seminars on Thursday, October 26 and November 9 in the New Education Lecture Theatre (NELT) at 2 pm. The topics being featured are: Discussion of Findings and Recommendations and Ethics in Research. The presenter for these sessions is Dr. Barbara Matalon. All postgraduate students are invited to attend.
