Study Skills Workshops
The Counselling Service Unit of the University Health Centre continues to offer a six part series workshop on Study Skills aimed at improving students’ academic performance and assisting them in better coping with the various pressures of campus life. These sessions take place each Thursday at 2 pm in the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1) in the Faculty of Humanities and Education until October 19. This Thursday, October 12 will feature the topic “Stress Management.”
The last workshop will cover "Test Taking Skills".
Sustainable Economics Development Unit Conference
The Sustainable Economics Development Unit (SEDU) at UWI, St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago will have its annual conference on October 16 and 17. The conference theme is: “Rising to the Challenge of Sustainable Development in Small & Island Developing States: Retrospect and Prospect”. UWI Lecturer will Participate in Education Forum
Professor Zellynne Jennings of the Department of Educational Studies, UWI, Mona will deliver the keynote address at a conference organised by the University of St. Maarten from October 11-13. The theme of the conference is “Re-thinking Education in the Caribbean: yesterday, today and tomorrow: A Local Imperative in a Global Context”. It focuses on issues such as history, curriculum development, teacher training, innovation in education and the development of alternative educational models of management for school improvement.
UWI Undertakes an On-Line Capacity Building Programme
The University of the West Indies (UWI) in collaboration with the Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD) of the Organization of American States (OAS) is developing a sustainable on-line capacity-building programme for drug demand reduction in the Caribbean. The direct beneficiaries of this programme are selected professionals in both public and private institutions working in substance abuse-related disciplines in the region.
5th Animae Caribe Animation, Film and New Media Festival
The 5th Animae Caribe Animation, Film and New Media Festival will take place from Thursday, October 5 to Saturday, October 7 at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus. The Festival is designed to provide young Caribbean persons with a platform for sharing Caribbean aesthetics through film, animation and new media. It also affords the opportunity to experience the creativity, innovation, enterprise and development in the film and media industry. ANNUAL SPORTS AWARDS PRESENTATION
The Sports Unit of The University of the West Indies hosts its annual Sports Awards Ceremony at the Rex Nettleford Multi-Purpose Hall on Saturday, September 30, at 7:00 p.m.
This ceremony will seek to recognize our athletes at the UWI, Mona who have represented the institution both locally and internationally during the academic year 2005/6. Mr. Chris Dehring-Chief Executive Officer-‘World Cup Cricket 2007’ will deliver the keynote address.
Lady Evelyn Standard
The University of the West Indies has learnt with regret of the passing of Lady Evelyn Standard, widow of Sir Kenneth Standard and mother of Dr Aileen Standard – Goldson, Medical Officer, University Health Services on Thursday, September 21. Thanksgiving Service for her life will be held on Saturday September 30 at Providence Methodist Church, 132 Old Hope Road. The UWI extends condolences to the family and friends of Lady Evelyn.
LAUNCH OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING WORKSHOP
The Electronics Unit of the Department of Chemistry located at St. Georges Close, in the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences UWI Mona invites the University community to the launch of the “Mechanical Engineering Workshop (MEW)” . The event will begin with an opening ceremony on Friday, October 6 at 3:00 p.m. in the Inter Faculty Lecture Theatre (IFLT) followed by a tour of the Workshop. The workshop offers comprehensive repairing and maintenance services for a variety of mechanical and electromechanical equipment all throughout Jamaica.
MIAS OFFERS WEB PAGE DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT COURSES
The Mona Institute of Applied Sciences (MIAS) at The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus is offering courses in Web Page Design and Web Development and Administration twice per week for twelve weeks beginning on October 9 and 10 respectively.

PUBLIC LECTURE ON MAHATMA GANDHI
The University community is invited to a public lecture entitled “Civil Disobedience as a Response to Political Oppression". The lecture is to celebrate the 138th Birthday of Mahatma Gandhi and will be delivered by Sir, Roy Augier, Professor Emeritus, Department of History, UWI, Mona. The lecture will be held at the Indian High Commission, 27 Seymour Avenue, Kingston 6 on October 2 at 7:30 p.m.
Sir Roy will include in his lecture the contributions made by great world leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Marcus Garvey, Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King towards world peace.
