Samuel Bertram Bandara

It is with much sadness that the University Community has learnt of the passing of Samuel Bertram Bandara, Senior Librarian II, on Monday, September 25. The University in general and his co-workers at the Library in particular, mourn his passing, and extend condolences to his wife, Swarna, Head of the Medical Branch Library, and to their children, relatives and friends. A Service of Thanksgiving for the Life Mr Bandara will take place on Friday, October 6 at the University Chapel beginning at 2:00 pm.

SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH CONFERENCE

The University of the West Indies, Advanced Training and Research in Fertility Management , Faculty of Medical Science will host a “Sexual and Reproductive Health Conference” between October 26 and 28 at the Knutsford Court Hotel. The theme for this year’s event is “Sexual and Reproductive Health, Our Mutual Responsibility.”

TAYLOR HALL AND MARY SEACOLE HALL CO-HOSTS “YOUR ISSUES LIVE”

Taylor Hall in collaboration with Mary Seacole Hall will host the TVJ programme “Your Issues Live” on Thursday, October 5 from 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on the lawns of Taylor Hall. The main theme of the programme will be "The UWI: Challenges and Responses". The programme will provide discussion to: assess the competitiveness of UWI as an institution of higher learning and examine the way forward for UWI.
Students and staff are invited to watch this programme as critical issues relating to the future of UWI will be brought to the fore.

UWI PROFESSOR INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN TEDS-M INTERNATIONAL EXPERT PANEL MEETING

Professor Hyacinth Evans, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Education and Director of the Institute of Education, at The University of the West Indies, Mona has been invited to participate in the Teacher Education Study of Mathematics (TEDS-M) International Expert Panel meeting that will be held from September 29 - 30, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA.

UWI/GUARDIAN LIFE PREMIUM TEACHING AWARD

The second UWI/Guardian Life Premium Teaching Award will be held on Wednesday, October 18 at the Gold Room at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre at 6 pm. The recipient for this year’s award, Dr. Tomlin Paul, lecturer in the Department of Community Health and Psychiatry in the Faculty of Medical Sciences, UWI, Mona along with the nominees will receive their award at this event.

UWIDEC AND COL WILL CO-HOST MEDIA LAUNCH FOR FOURTH PAN COMMONWEALTH FORUM

The University of the West Indies Distance Education Centre (UWIDEC) will co- host a media launch along with the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) on Monday, October 2 at 2:30 pm to announce the Fourth Pan Commonwealth Forum (PCF4) on Open Learning which will take place at the Sunset Jamaica Grande Resort, Ocho Rios, on October 30 to November 3. Philbert Dhyll, Assistant Chief Education Officer, Tertiary Unit at the Ministry of Education and Youth will be in attendance to represent his ministry.

Call For Papers- Caribbean Journal Of Psychology

The Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work, UWI, Mona Campus invites individuals to submit their articles for the upcoming issue of the Caribbean Journal of Psychology; a product of the Psychology Unit. Articles should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication somewhere else, and should be no longer than 3,000 words. Brief reports, commentaries and book reviews should be no longer than 1000 words.

Condolences

The University of the West Indies community expresses sincere condolences to the family and friends of Rev. Dr. Lewin Williams who recently passed away after a brief illness in New Jersey, U.S.A. Condolence is also extended to the staff and students of the United Theological College in their time of loss. Rev. Dr. Lewin Williams was the President of the United Theological College of the West Indies.

Fee Payment Reminder

The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus wishes to remind all students that the deadline for the payment of all tuition fees for the first semester of the 2006/2007 academic year is September 29.
Students who do not comply with the payment deadline will not have completed their registration and will be given compulsory Leave of Absence for the semester. Such students will not be able to access facilities such as the Health Centre and the Library. Students are therefore encouraged to comply with the above stated deadline in order to avoid the inconvenience.

General Meeting for the CAS, Jamaica Chapter

The 11th General Meeting of the Caribbean Academy of Sciences (CAS), Jamaica Chapter, will be held on September 28 at 2.30 p.m. in the Chemistry Lecture Theatre, C5. All members of the Academy and interested persons are invited to attend. The keynote address entitled “The Trouble With Sugar – Curse or Cure” will be delivered by Dr. Earle Roberts, Director of Sugar Industry Research Institute (SIRI), Jamaica.
