BOOK LAUNCH

The Faculty of Humanities and Education will host a launch of the book Ruined by “Race” Afro-Caribbean Missionaries and the Evangelization of Southern Nigeria, 1985-1925 by Dr. Waibinte Wariboko on Wednesday, November 8 commencing at 6:00 p.m. in the Multifunctional Room, Main Library, UWI Mona Campus.
Dr. Swithin Wilmot, Head, Department of History and Archaeology, Faculty of Humanities and Education will bring greetings, while Sir Roy Augier, (Emeritus Professor of History) Department of History and Archaeology, Faculty of Humanities and Education, UWI will launch the book.

"Lets Talk Garifuna”

The Belize Students’ Association (BSAJ) and Vincentian Students’ Association (VINSA) in collaboration with the Department of Language, Linguistics and Philosophy and the Institute of Caribbean Studies, invite the University community to a presentation entitled “Lets Talk Garifuna: Our Story, Not His-Story” an examination of the Garifuna journey of exile from St. Vincent to Belize. The presentation takes place on Saturday, November 18 as part of Settlement Day which is on officially celebrated on Sunday, November 19.

ANNUAL WORLD OF WORK SEMINARS

The Office of Placement and Career Services continues to hold its Annual World of Work Seminars each Thursday at 3 pm until November 23.

The series of seminars focus on assisting students (prospective employees) to expand their skills and competencies and enhance their academics in order to be improve the success in the world of work.

The upcoming seminar for Thursday, November 9 addresses the topic “Entrepreneurship: The way Forward” presented by Roger Cogle, District Vice President, Bank of Nova Scotia Jamaica Limited.

CARICOM / OAS SPANISH TEACHERS WORKSHOP

CARICOM, in association with the Organisation of American States, will be holding a Workshop for Teacher Training in the Delivery of the CARICOM Primary Level Enhanced Spanish Curriculum, on November 7-10, at The University of the West Indies, Mona. This workshop is being coordinated by the Latin American-Caribbean Centre, and constitutes the third phase of an OAS/CARICOM Project. It will entail the training of trainers who will, in the next phase of the project, train Primary Spanish teachers in their respective countries.

CERTIFICATE PROGRAMME IN ELECTRONIC ENGINEERING

The Department of Physics, UWI, Mona in collaboration with the School of Continuing Studies will be offering a certificate programme in Electronic Engineering. This programme is designed to produce technically proficient graduates who will meet the needs of the Jamaican and Caribbean Electronics and Communications Engineering Industries at large. Students will learn how to: select, calibrate and operate appropriate electronic test equipment, perform advanced testing procedures on electronic products and execute major trouble shooting procedures and repairs on consumer electronic products.

DIRECTOR OF TMRI RECEIVES HONOUR

Professor Terrence Forrester, Director of the Tropical Medicine Research Institute (TMRI) at The University of the West Indies, Mona was among the honourees at the first Anthony N Sabga ‘Caribbean Awards for Excellence’ launched by the Ansa McAl Foundation with the aim of encouraging the pursuit of excellence by Caribbean people for the benefit of the region. The gala award ceremony took place recently at the Hilton Trinidad Hotel in Port-of-Spain.

GRADUATE SEMINAR

The School of Education, UWI, Mona will be hosting a seminar for graduate students on Thursday, November 16 in the New Education Lecture Theatre (NELT) at 2 pm. The topic Phenomenology will be presented by Dr. Karen Carpenter. M.Phil. students are especially invited.

INAUGURAL PROFESSORIAL LECTURE

The Faculty of Social Sciences hosts its inaugural Professorial Lecture in which Professor Brian Meeks from the Department of Government will present on the topic “Imagining the Future: Rethinking the Political in Jamaica.” This event takes place on November 28 at 6 pm at the Undercroft, The University of the West Indies. An invitation is extended to the public to participate in this lecture.

LACC FILM SHOWING

The Latin American-Caribbean Centre has organized another film showing of an Argentine film “Iluminados por el fuego” (“Enlightened by Fire”) directed by Tristán Bauer. It will be shown on Wednesday, November 15 at 7.00pm in N1. The film is 100 minutes, with English subtitles. The admission is free and an invitation is extended to all.

PROFESSOR EMERITUS CONFERRED

The University Finance and General Purposes Committee has approved the title Professor Emeritus with immediate effect on the following individuals:

• Professor Ramesh Deosaran, Director of the Centre for Criminology and Criminal Justice, UWI, St. Augustine
• Professor Alston Barrington Chevannes, former Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, UWI, Mona and Professor of Social Anthropology
• Professor Alfred A.J. Francis (retired), former Head of Department of Economics, Faculty of Social Sciences, UWI, Mona.
