Norma Amenu-Kpodo
The University of the West Indies is pleased to announce the appointment of Mrs. Norma Amenu-Kpodo, former Deputy Campus Librarian to the post of Campus Librarian at UWI, Mona, effective October 1, 2004. She succeeds former Campus and University Librarian Stephney Ferguson who retired at the end of September 2004. Mrs. Amenu-Kpodo is no stranger to her new role having acted as Campus Librarian in 2002/2003.
Public Relations Expo
The Advanced Public Relations class of the Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC) at UWI, Mona is organizing a Public Relations Expo on Wednesday 24 November in the Assembly Hall at UWI from 11am to 4:00 p.m. The event is titled, “PR in Action: Showcasing the value of Public Relations to our Society”. The event will begin with a formal Opening Ceremony where Mr. Robert Gregory, CEO of Heart Trust NTA and Mrs. Marcia Forbes, former General Manager of TVJ will give feature addresses on the role of PR in large organizations as well as in the media.
Soundscape Conference at UWI Cave Hill
The Department of African American Studies, Ohio University and the Learning Resource Centre of The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill will host the conference Soundscapes: Reflections on Caribbean Oral and Aural Traditions, July 25 to July 29, 2005, at the UWI, Cave Hill Campus, Barbados. The conference will explore the various sound texts that are unique to the Caribbean. The event, which will coincide with Barbados' annual Crop-Over festival, also invites papers that explore Caribbean oral and aural heritage and their contemporary manifestations and dynamics.
Student Exchange Mini Fair
The Admissions Section, UWI Mona will be having a Student Exchange Mini Fair on Wednesday, November 24 starting with an opening ceremony at 9:30 a.m. UWI student are invited to come and hear Professor Patrick Solomon, representative from York University in Toronto, Canada. There will also be presentations from persons who have participated in the student exchange programme. The fair ends at 2:00 p.m. Members of staff and students are invited to attend.
Walter Rodney Lecture
The Institute of Caribbean Studies at the UWI Mona Campus will host the Sixth Walter Rodney Lecture, to be delivered by Professor Verene A. Shepherd on Thursday, November 25, 2004 at the Emancipation Park in New Kingston starting at 6:00 pm. The topic for this year's event is War Memorials & Black Liberation: 'Groundings' with Walter Rodney on History, Heritage and Activism.
World of Work Seminars
The Closing Ceremony for the annual World of Work seminars will take place on Thursday, November 25 at 3:00 p.m. in the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1) Faculty of Humanities and Education. The World of Work seminars are organized by the Office of Placement and Career Services at UWI Mona.
Branding the UWI
Chancellor of the UWI, Sir George Alleyne has said that it is in the interest of the University that it protects and maintains a strong brand among members of the public it serves. Sir George was speaking at the UWI Mona 2004 graduation ceremonies at Mona. The Chancellor noted that “the success of branding in a university depends on the experience as well as the product. It is in our interest that the public retain trust in us, regard us as standing for certain values and automatically equate us with quality in any of the spheres in which we move”.
CTLPA Workshop
The Caribbean Tertiary Level Personnel Association (CTLPA) will host a workshop for Student Services personnel on Friday, November 19 at the Medallion Hall Hotel in Kingston. The theme of the workshop is Student Services Personnel – Preparing Students for Life. The workshop’s objectives include examining theories dealing with student development in tertiary level institutions and discussing what the literature says about how the institutions’ environment enhance or restrict student development and thus impact positively or negatively on student learning. Jamaica Committee Scholarship 2004/2005
Nicola Brown a student in Department of Educational Studies, Faculty of Humanities and Education, UWI, Mona is the recipient of the Jamaica Committee Scholarship for the 2004/2005 academic year. The Jamaica Committee, an US registered Not For Profit Corporation, comprised of Jamaicans and lovers of Jamaica, is committed to helping, to provide a better life for the less advantaged of the island.
Philosophy Day
The Department of Language, Linguistics and Philosophy, UWI Mona will host Philosophy Day 2004 on Thursday, November 18 under the theme Philosophy, Poverty and Human Rights. The day is being sponsored by UNESCO Caribbean, Kingston, Jamaica and the day’s programme takes place in the Multifunctional Room, Main Library starting at 9:00 a.m. and ends with a public lecture at 6:00 p.m. The lecture will be given by Dr. Sunday O. Iyare and is titled Poverty and Hunger in the Caribbean – Human Rights Issue.
