Global Conference on Educational Research
Global Development Network (GDN) is inviting University academics to submit papers for presentation at the Global Conference on Educational Research in Developing Countries, which will take place between March 31 and April 2, 2005 in Prague, Czech Republic. Interested persons should also note that the GDN will fund the travel and expenses for persons who are selected to present papers at this conference.
The conference will focus exclusively on preschool, primary and secondary education.
Panel Discussion
The HRD Alumni Association and the MSc. Human Resource Development programme, Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work, UWI will host a panel discussion on Sexual Harassment in the Workplace: Towards a National Policy on Wednesday, November 10 in Seminar Room II at the Social Welfare Training Centre, UWI. from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The presenters on the panel will be Mrs. Antonnette Haughton-Cardenal who will speak on the Sexual Harrassment Bill that has been tabled in the Jamaican Parliament; Mrs.
Seminar on Research Planning and Funding
The Mona Association of Postgraduate Students (MAPS) will host a Seminar on Research Planning and Funding on November 11, 2004 in New Education Lecture Theatre (NELT) from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The main presenter will be Ms. Gale Hall, Research Support Officer, Office of Research, UWI, Cave Hill, Barbados. She will speak about sourcing and writing proposals for funding for research.
UWI Staff Serve Through Red Cross
Members of the staff of the UWI have been actively involved in giving voluntary service to Jamaica and the Caribbean through the Jamaica Red Cross, a division of the Emergency Services. One such service has been the provision of psychological support to Red Cross volunteers as well as survivors of Hurricane Ivan. The Disaster Mental Health Service of the Jamaica Red Cross, is headed by Dr Angela Gordon Stair, Senior Counsellor at the Health Centre, UWI, Mona. In Jamaica, teams have been working in the Kingston Metropolitan Area, as well as in Portland Cottage in Clarendon.
WIGUT Bursaries
The West Indies Group of University Teachers (WIGUT) will host a ceremony on Thursday, November 11 at 4:00 p.m. at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre, UWI, Mona to present bursaries to students at Mona. WIGUT, the trade union that represents the interests of Academic and Senior Administrative Staff at Mona was established in 1958 and became a trade union in 1972. The organisation established the Bursary Scheme to assist needy students in 1991 through the initiative of former WIGUT President and current Deputy Principal at Mona, Mr. Joseph Periera.
Annual Research Conference and Workshop
The Faculty of Medical Sciences, The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus will host its 13th Annual Research Conference and Workshop from November 10 to 12, 2004 on the Mona Campus. Chairman of the planning committee, Dr. John Lindo says the annual conference allows researchers in the Faculty to share and explore developments in health research with members of the medical community and the wider community who are important stakeholders in the UWI.
Congratulations
The Instructional Development Unit (IDU) is pleased to announce that Dr. Willard Pinnock, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry is the winner of the first UWI/Guardian Life Premium Teaching Award for 2004. In a ceremony held on October 7 and attended by his colleagues, family, friends and special guests, Dr. Pinnock accepted his award of cash and two trophies.
Faculty Awards Ceremony
The Faculty of Humanities and Education, UWI Mona Campus will host its annual Faculty Awards Ceremony on November 11 at 2:00 p.m. in the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1). The members of the University community and the wider public are invited to attend this event.
Invitation to Graduates from the period 1952-1955
The first official Graduation Ceremony of the University College of the West Indies was held some 50 years ago. The University is extending a special invitation to graduates from the period 1952-1955 to attend the Graduation exercises scheduled to be held on Friday November 5 and Saturday November 6, 2004 at the Mona Campus, beginning at 5:30 pm. The University would therefore be grateful if these graduates from this period would contact the Public Relations Office at telephone numbers 977-5941 or 977-7346 to confirm their attendance.

The Presentation of Graduates Ceremonies for 2004 Graduates will be held on Friday November 5 and Saturday November 6, 2004 at 5:30 p.m. as follows: On Friday graduates of the Faculties of Humanities & Education & Higher Degrees, Law, Pure & Applied Sciences & Higher Degrees, Science & Agriculture & Higher Degrees and Engineering will be presented. On Saturday the Faculties of Medical Sciences & Higher Degrees and Social Sciences & Higher Degrees will be presented.
