New Vice Chancellor

The Council of The University of the West Indies has appointed Professor Eon Nigel Harris to succeed Professor the Hon Rex Nettleford as Vice Chancellor. The decision was made at an extraordinary meeting of the Council held at the Sherbourne Centre in Barbados on Saturday, December 13. A Guyanese by birth, Professor Harris is currently Dean and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, USA. He is internationally known for his work as a Rheumatologist.

UWI Alumni Office Closure

The UWI Alumni Association’s Docuspot Office will be closed at 12:00 noon on Tuesday, December 23, 2003 and reopen at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, January 5, 2004. The Association wishes its members, UWI graduates, Jamaica and the world a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

UWI Office Closure

In addition to the public holidays, the UWI Mona Campus will be closed on December 24 and 31 at 12:30 p.m. Please note that the Library will be closed all day on Saturday, December 27, 2003. The Mona Campus administration also takes the opportunity to wish everyone a Blessed Christmas and a Prosperous, safe and productive New Year.

Gender, Sexuality & Implications for HIV/AIDS

The Centre for Gender and Development Studies (CGDS), University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Unit, proposes to embark on a comprehensive research initiative that investigates the influence of gender norms, expectations, behaviours, and the associated power relations, on sexuality and the implications for HIV/AIDS risk and prevention in Trinidad and Tobago. The Centre will therefore host a regional symposium from March 10 to 13, 2004 in Trinidad and Tobago.

Graduate Programme in Coastal Zone Engineering

The Faculty of Engineering, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, UWI St. Augustine is inviting applications to its graduate programme in Coastal Zone Engineering. This programme has two offerings: the Post Graduate Diploma in Coastal Zone Processes and the M.Sc. in Coastal Zone Engineering. The Department is also inviting applications from persons wishing to be specially admitted to pursue individual courses.

KPMG Peat Marwick Scholarship

The KPMG Peat Marwick scholarship for the 2003/2004 academic year has been awarded to Latoya Hylton, a second year student in the Faculty of Social Sciences. The award was presented recently by Mr. Rafael Gordon, Managing Partner and Ms. Marjorie Allen, Human Resources Manager at KPMG Peat Marwick. The scholarship is valued at $200,000 per year and is awarded for the final two years of the BSc. Accounting programme. It is awarded based on academic performance and financial need. One scholarship is awarded every two years.

Long Service Awards

The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus will host its Annual Long Service Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, December 16 at 5:00 p.m. at the Mona Visitors Lodge and Conference Centre. The Campus will honour employees who have given 15, 21, 30 and 40 years of service to the institution.
