Masters of Science in Family Medicine

The Department of Community Health and Psychiatry, Faculty of Medical Sciences at UWI Mona is inviting applications for entry to its Masters of Science in Family Medicine. This programme which is taught mainly by distance is being offered in recognition of the demand for medical practitioners in general medical practice to upgrade their skills and maintain excellent health care in the 21st century. The programme consists of course work by distance education and participation one day per week at clinical sessions. A research project is also required in the final year.

MIAS Short Courses

The Mona Institute of Applied Sciences (MIAS) is offering several Information Technology courses geared to fulfill a variety of computer and IT professional needs. The courses will allow participants to improve their performance on the job and in the classroom with an increased level of proficiency in computer applications. The next cycle of classes start in February, 2004. The courses being offered are Fundamentals of Computers and Computer Office Applications costing $6000 per module. Also being offered is Introduction to Programming which costs $8,000 per module.

The UWI Alumni Association

The UWI Alumni Association wishes a merry Christmas and happy New Year to its members and all UWI graduates. The association’s wish for its members, UWI graduates, Jamaica and the World, is peace, health and happiness in the year 2004. Members are reminded that the association’s newsletter for November 2003 to January 2004 is now available online. All members are asked to get information on the association’s activities and plans by visiting the website at www.uwialumni.org.jm. Members are also urged to contribute to their alma mater by giving to the Great Things for UWI programme.

UWI Holiday Closure

In addition to the public holidays, the UWI Mona Campus will be closed on December 24 and 31 at 12:30 p.m. Please note that the Library will be closed all day on Saturday, December 27, 2003. The Mona Campus administration also takes this opportunity to wish everyone a blessed Christmas and a prosperous, safe and productive New Year.

Annual Dorian Powell Prize giving Awards Ceremony

The Centre for Gender and Development Studies, UWI, Mona Unit is inviting members of the Mona community to its Annual Dorian Powell Prize-giving Awards Ceremony. The ceremony takes place on Friday, December 19, 2003 at 1:00 p.m. in the Multifunctional Room of the Main Library.

Applications for Restructured Masters of Social Work Programme.

The Department of Sociology, Psychology & Social Work, UWI Mona, is now accepting applications for its restructured Masters of Social Work Programme. The Programme at Mona celebrated its 10th anniversary recently, and used the occasion to “fine tune” selected aspects of its offering. The Masters in Social Work now provides prospective candidates with an increased range of options including specializations in administration and management and clinical social work practice. There is also a new specialization in community organization and policy practice.

Congress on Disasters

Three UWI Mona academics attended the Sixth International Congress on Disasters and the Second International Seminar on Risk Management held in Havana, Cuba, November 24 to 28, 2003. They are Dr. Angela Gordon Stair, Counselling Psychologist, UWI Counselling Service, Dr. Audrey Pottinger, Clinical Psychologist, Department of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Child Health and Miss Beverley Lashley, Librarian and Coordinator, Caribbean Disaster Information Network (CARDIN).

Dr. Susan P. Mains

Dr. Susan P. Mains, Lecturer at UWI Mona is the 2004 recipient of the McColl Family Fellowship. Dr. Mains plans to travel to Toronto to explore the experiences of Jamaican migrants living there. Her research will involve archive research on migration to Toronto from the Caribbean, in-depth interviews with members of the Jamaican community, as well as with community/government leaders, and the filming of interviews as part of an ongoing documentary project. Dr. Mains earned her doctorate in Geography at the University of Kentucky.
