International Volunteers’ Day

The University of the West Indies Mona Campus will celebrate International Volunteers’ Day on Friday, December 5 at the August Town Primary School beginning at 9:00 a.m. Activities will include a Panel Discussion entitled Poverty Alleviation through Volunteerism, Education and Cooperation. Panellists will include Dr. Clinton Hutton, Lecturer, Department of Government, Dr. Ian Boxill, Head, Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work and Professor Barry Chevannes, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Michael Manley Memorial Lecture

The Michael Manley Memorial Lecture will take place at the Little Theatre, Tom Redcam Avenue on Wednesday, December 10 at 7p.m. with cocktails at 6:15 p.m. The lecturer will be Sir George Alleyne, Chancellor of the University of the West Indies and Director Emeritus of PAHO. He will speak on Globalisation and the Challenges for Caribbean Health. Please note that the dress code for the lecture is casual.

Mona Information Technical Services is offering a comprehensive list of Information Technology (IT) training programmes online to UWI staff and students. Courses include Microsoft Office: (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint), Auto Cad, Publisher, Corel Draw, Web Development and many more.

School of Education Biennial Conference Call for Papers

The School of Education, Faculty of Humanities and Education, UWI, Mona will host its Biennial Conference from April 15-17, 2004 at the Renaissance Jamaica Grande, Ocho Rios. This year’s theme is Celebrating Achievements in Caribbean Education: Transformation Diversity and Collaboration.

Wellness Taskforce Pilot Study

The Wellness Task Force UWI Mona is now conducting a pilot study on student wellness. Data from this pilot survey will give information on issues affecting student wellbeing at Mona and will form the basis for a more comprehensive study to be done at a later date. Students who are asked by the research assistants to complete the electronic questionnaire are encouraged to participate fully in the process, as this information will eventually be used to enhance the university experience for all students.

Application for January 2004

Applications are invited for entry in January 2004 from suitably qualified persons who wish to pursue the Post Graduate Degree in Oral Medicine, to be offered by the Faculty of Medical Sciences, UWI, St. Augustine. The Post-graduate Degree in Oral Medicine is suitable for graduates in dentistry or medicine. The programme spans one academic year full-time or two academic years part-time.

Book Launch for Language in Education

The Department of Language, Linguistics and Philosophy and Arawak Publications will launch a book “Language in Jamaica” a true story from Dr. Pauline Christie’s fascinating and simply written book on Friday, November 28 at 6:00 p.m. at the Undercroft, the University of the West Indies, Mona.
All kinds of odd ideas about Language in Jamaica constantly find their way to the airwaves and newspapers, with some people actually believing that “Patois is not a language” or that “Jamaicans have no language, therefore they are aggressive”. Autographed copies will be on sale.

Creative Arts & Craft Market Place

The Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts at UWI Mona will host another staging of Kuumba – the Creative Art and Craft Marketplace and Christmas Bazaar on the lawns of the Centre, November 26 - 28, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. On sale will be leather items, paintings and many more art and craft items.
