Second Workshop for Student Services Professionals
The Caribbean Tertiary Level Personnel Association hosted its second workshop for Student Services Professionals at the Knutsford Court Hotel in Kingston. The workshop was held on Wednesday, November 26, and focused on the topic “Understanding College/University Students’ Behaviour”. The main presenter was, Dr. Peter Weller, Clinical Psychologist, Counselling Unit at the UWI, Mona Health Centre. Student Services Personnel at the workshop represented tertiary institutions across the island including Sam Sharpe, Mico, Bethlehem Moravian and St. Josephs Teachers Colleges.

The French Government
The French Government is inviting qualified Jamaicans to apply for positions as English Language Assistants for the next academic year. These positions will be available in mainland France as well as in the French overseas departments of Guadeloupe and Martinique. The programme is designed to allow Jamaican assistants to master the French Language and customs while providing French students with the authenticity of their language and the richness of their culture. The programme is open to Jamaican professionals and students aged 20 to 30 years.

The UWI Alumni Association Newsletter for November 2003 to January 2004 is now available. All members are asked to get information on the association’s activities and plans by visiting the website at www.uwialumni.org.jm. Members are also urged to contribute to their alma mater by giving to the Great Things for UWI programme. They may make their deposit at any branch of the National Commercial Bank, to account # 402-609-818. Funds donated to Great Things for UWI are used to help construct new buildings and purchase equipment for the University.
Visiting Canadian Scholar
The Department of Literatures in English, in association with the West Indian Association of Commonwealth Language and Literature Studies will host writer and scholar, Professor Daniel Coleman of Canada at UWI Mona from Monday, December 8 to Friday, December 12. On Tuesday, December 9 at 5:30 p.m. Professor Coleman will give a reading from his memoir, The Scent of Eucalyptus, which is about his experience as a child of missionaries in Ethiopia. The venue is the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts.
Application for January 2004
Applications are invited for entry in January 2004 from suitably qualified persons who wish to pursue the Post Graduate Degree in Oral Medicine, to be offered by the Faculty of Medical Sciences, UWI, St. Augustine. The Post-graduate Degree in Oral Medicine is suitable for graduates in dentistry or medicine. The programme spans one academic year full-time or two academic years part-time.
Centre for Marine Sciences
The Centre for Marine Sciences, UWI, Mona, has obtained funding from the Environmental Foundation of Jamaica, (EFJ), to carry out research on the Rackham’s cay coral relocation monitoring project. The EFJ has agreed to provide approximately J$3.7m which will be used to conduct the monitoring programme. The project is scheduled to last for fourteen months and aims to monitor the survival, mortality and growth rates of transplanted coral units of the cay located near Kingston.

IDU Workshop
The Instructional Development Unit, UWI Mona will host a presentation called An Approach to Handling Sensitive Issues while Teaching by Dr. Sanjana Bhardwaj, of the Department of Community Health and Psychiatry. The presentation will take place on Monday, December 8 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the IDU conference room at Mona. All lecturers are invited to attend.
Institute for Hospitality and Tourism Established
The UWI Institute for Hospitality and Tourism, which was formally approved in May 2003, has now been established with a network of four coordinators. The Institute will draw on university-wide support, especially the Faculty of Social Sciences, to carry out research, conduct post-graduate seminars, workshops. It will also respond to requests from governments, the Caribbean Tourism Organisation, the Caribbean Hotels Association and other relevant bodies for research into particular issues.
