Chancellor Hall Current Affairs Club

Chancellor Hall’s Current Affairs Club will host a Lecture on “Caribbean Single Market and Economy – Its Offerings Ramifications and Potential Impact on the Lifestyles of Caribbean Citizens 2005 and Beyond”. The guest speaker will be Dr. Byron Blake, Deputy Secretary General of CARICOM. The Lecture will take place on Tuesday, September 16 at 5:30 p.m. at the Undercroft of the Senate Building. Denarto Dennis Chancellor Hall External Affairs Hall Chairperson says the lecture is being held because the Current Affairs Club believes in fostering a proactive and informed student body.

Music Unit

The Music Unit at UWI Mona will be offering classes in guitar and voice starting the week of September 15. Both courses will cost $3,500. UWI students and staff will receive a 50% discount. Students interested in learning drumming may also participate in the UWI Drum Ensemble at no cost. Please note that students for drum and guitar must have access to an instrument. Professor Carolyn Cooper

Dr. Carolyn Cooper, Professor of Literary and Cultural Studies in the Department of Literatures in English, UWI, will deliver her Inaugural Lecture on Thursday, September 25 at 6:00 p.m. at the Undercroft of the Senate Building. Her lecture is titled Professing Slackness: Language, Authority and Power Within the Academy and Without. The public is invited.

Study Skills Workshops

The Counselling Service of UWI Health Centre will once again offer new students a series of study skills workshop each Thursday afternoon from September 11 to October 16. The workshops are designed to help students excel in their academics. The second workshop will be held on Thursday, September 25, between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. The topic will be “Time Management”. The venue is the Neville Hall Lecture Threatre N1, Faculty of Humanities and Education.

The Office of Graduate Studies and Research

The Office of Graduate Studies and Research is now inviting applications for Research and Publications and Graduate Awards. The Mona Campus Research and Publications and Graduate Awards Committee will consider all applications received by 4:30 p.m. on September 16. UWI Distinguished Lecture

Dr. Aloo Asotsi Mojola, lecturer in Linguistics at the University of Kenya and Africa Inter-Regional Translation Coordinator of the United Bible Societies will deliver the next in the UWI Distinguished Lecture Series. His lecture, which is titled “Translation of the Bible into African Languages”, will take place on Tuesday, September 16 beginning at 5:00 p.m. at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts.

UWI Mona Sports Department Annual Awards Ceremony

The UWI, Mona Sports Department will host its Annual Awards Ceremony on Saturday, September 27 at 7 p.m. The venue is the Multi-purpose Room at Rex Nettleford Hall. The ceremony will honour outstanding performers in sports for the 2002/2003 academic year.

UWI Vice Chancellor Addresses the Association of Commonwealth Universities

The Vice Chancellor of the University of the West Indies, Professor the Hon. Rex Nettleford addressed the General Conference of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) at Queen's University Belfast on September 3.

Amharic Language Course

The Institute of Caribbean Studies, UWI will be offering an introductory non-degree course in Amharic, one of the official languages of Ethiopia. Ethiopia holds special interest for many Jamaicans, and Amharic is used in the liturgy of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church in Jamaica. Amharic evolved from the ancient Ethiopian language, Ge’ez and is used in everyday speech in Ethiopia. Scheduled to run from September 8 to December 12, classes will be on Mondays and Wednesdays, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Registration is limited to 20 persons.
