Annual Medical Sciences Research Conference and Workshop

The Faculty of Medical Sciences Annual Research Conference and Workshop will take place from November 12 to 14 on the Mona Campus. The theme of this year’s activities is “Ageing Will: A Life Course Perspective”. Chancellor Hall Current Affairs Club

Chancellor Hall Current Affairs Club will host a lecture on “Caribbean Single Market and Economy – Its Offerings Ramifications and Potential Impact on the Lifestyles of Caribbean Citizens 2005 and Beyond”. The guest speaker will be the Hon. Dr. Edwin Carrington, Secretary General of CARICOM. The lecture will take place at 5:30 p.m. at the Undercroft of the Senate Building. Denarto Dennis Chancellor Hall External Affairs Hall Chairperson says the lecture was being held because the Current Affairs Club believed in the engenderment of a proactive and informed student body.

Congratulations to Jenice Daley

While the majority of track and field enthusiasts were tuned to the 9th World Athletes Championships held in St. Denis, Paris, France, Jamaican athletes, coached by UWI’s Michael Ollivierre, were quietly representing their country at the World University Games in Daegu, South Korea, between August 21 and 31. Jenice Daley, one of two UWI students on the team placed third in the 200m in a time of 23.55 giving Jamaica its only medal.

Courses in Spanish and French

The Department of Modern Languages and Literature is inviting University personnel to register for courses in Spanish and French. These courses are designed for persons who are interested in learning or developing foreign language skills, but do not have the time to attend classes off campus. The programmes level offered are: beginners, intermediate or advanced. A fee of $4600 is charged for each course and is payable at the beginning of the term which will start on September 29. This covers 30 teaching hours over a ten-week period.

Library Tours

The UWI Main Library is inviting all new students to participate in tours of the Library which will continue weekdays until September 12. The tours are designed to help students become familiar with the Library’s services and to share tips that will enhance their academic research. Tours of the Main Library will be conducted Mondays to Fridays between 10:00 a.m. and 12 noon and between 2:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Please check the Main Library for specific times. Tours of the Science Library will take place hourly between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

PSCCA Courses

The Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts (PSCCA) at UWI Mona will be offering classes in guitar and voice starting the week of September 15. Both courses will cost $3,500. UWI students and staff will receive a 50% discount. Students interested in learning drumming may also participate in the UWI Drum Ensemble at no cost. Please note that students for drum and guitar must have access to an instrument. For further information please call 927-1877 or 935-8428.

Study Skills Workshops

The Counselling Service of UWI Health Centre will once again offer new students a series of study skills workshop each Thursday afternoon from September 11 to October 16. The workshops are designed to help students excel in their academics. The first workshop will be held on Thursday, September 11, between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. This week’s topic will be “Studying for Success – Facts and Myths”. The venue is the N 4 Lecture Room in the Faculty of Humanities and Education.

UWI Medical Alumni Association (Jamaica Chapter)

The UWI Medical Alumni Association Jamaica Chapter will be hosting the Fourth annual Golf Tournament at the Constant Spring Golf Club on Saturday, September 20. The format will be 7/8 Handicap and the proceeds will be in aid of Needy Students and the University Hospital of the West Indies Medical Intermediate Unit project.

UWI: Bridging the Gap with the Community

“The University of the West Indies: Bridging the Gap with the Community” is the theme of a three day conference being organised by the Faculty of Social Sciences at the Mona Campus from September 11 – 14.

UWIHARP Scientific Meeting

The UWI HIV AIDS Response Programme, (UWIHARP) will host its first Business and Scientific Meeting from Friday, September 12 to Saturday, September 13 at the Kapok Hotel in Trinidad and Tobago. Persons attending the meeting are expected to share up-to-date information relevant to UWIHARP and the project to strengthen institutional response to HIV AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases in the Caribbean. This includes managerial reports on the work of UWIHARP and the results of research done to date under the influence of UWIHARP.
