The Placement and Career Services
The Annual World of Work Seminars are scheduled to be held from Thursday, October 16 to Thursday, November 20. The seminars are designed to assist students to develop general world of work skills and competences as well as network with human resources practitioners. The seminar will begin at 3:00 p.m. each Thursday and will be held in SR10, Faculty of Social Sciences during the month of November and the seminars will be at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1).
The Role of Religion in the Caribbean History
Professor Barry Chevannes, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences will be the guest speaker at the launch of the book The Role of Religion in Caribbean History – From Amerindian Shamanism to Rastafarianism. The book, which is written by Patrick “Pops” Hylton, will be launched at the Undercroft of the Senate Building on Tuesday, October 14 at 6:00 p.m. The launch will include a panel on the Role of Religion in Caribbean History and will include panelllist: Dr. Phyllis Green, Dr. Elaine Foster-Allen and Burton Sankaralli. The public is invited.
UN SASAKAWA Award
Rafi Ahmad of the Unit for Disaster Studies, Department of Geography and Geology is one of the recipients of the UN Sasakawa Certificate of Distinction Award for Disaster Reduction. The Awards were announced on October 8, the International Day for Disaster Reduction. The Award Ceremony will take place on October 16 in Bonn Germany. Mr. Ahmad is being recognized for his contributions to the Jamaican Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management which includes the study of natural hazards in Jamaica and the development of hazard maps.
UWI Alumni Association, Jamaica Chapter
UWI Alumni Association, Jamaica Chapter continues its celebration of Alumni Week until Thursday, October 16. As part of the celebrations the members of the Medical Alumni Association will host a Clinicopathological Conference on Wednesday, October 15 from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. The venue is the Main Medical Lecture Theatre, Faculty of Medical Sciences. There will also be a Societies Expo on Thursday, October 16 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The venue is the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts.
UWI to host Conference on “Regional Governance and Integrated Development”
Prime Minister of Jamaica and Chairman of CARICOM the Most Honourable P. J. Patterson will deliver the feature address at the Opening Ceremony of a CARICOM 30th Anniversary Conference on “Regional Governance and Integrated Development” on Friday, October 17 at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre, UWI Mona Campus from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
The Conference which will run from October 17 – 19 is organized and sponsored by the Office of the Principal, UWI in collaboration with the Caribbean Development Bank.
Young Economists Association
The Young Economics Association (YEA) will be hosting a presentation by The Hon. Dr. Omar Davies, Minister of Finance and Planning, on Thursday, October 16 at 2:00 p.m. in the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre. Dr. Davies will open the series of presentations scheduled for this academic year 2003/2004. His topic is The Policy Challenges the Government faces with regard to informal economic activities. The public is invited.
Caribbean Childhood: From Research to Action
The Children’s Issues Coalition of the University of the West Indies (Mona) announces the launch of its inaugural volume of its new Journal, Caribbean Childhoods: From Research to Action. The launch will be held on Monday, October 6 at 5:00 p.m. at the Caribbean Child Development Centre, located at the Mona Bowl. Professor Elsa Leo Rhynie, convenor of the Children’s Issues Coalition, will chair the launch. Robert Gregory, Executive Director of the HEART National Training Agency, will be guest speaker, and the Caribbean Youth Orchestra will perform.
Haitian Independence Bicentenary Conference
The UWI St. Augustine Campus’s Faculty of Humanities and Education will host the Haitian Independence Bi-centenary Conference from June 15 to 18, 2004 in Trinidad. The conference is being held under the theme “Re-interpreting the Haitian Revolution and its cultural aftershocks, 1804-2004”. The Department is inviting interested persons to submit papers for presentation at this conference. The conference is timely because the year 2004 will mark the two-hundredth anniversary of the proclamation of Haitian independence by the former slave Jean-Jacques Dessalines.
IDU Lunch Hour Discussion
The Instructional Development Unit (IDU), Mona will host a series of Lunch Hour Discussions each Thursday, between October 9 and December 4 focussing on Course Design. The discussions will be presented in four parts and are designed to familiarize participants with the process of designing and evaluating courses. On October 9 the focus will be on Developing Course Rationale. Other topics in the series will be Developing Course Objectives and Translating Objectives through Materials Selection and Structuring Learning Tasks. The series presenters will be Ms. Meta Bogle and Dr.
International Vaccine Trial
The UWI’s Vaccines Infectious Diseases Centre has now enrolled more than 1000 babies in the local leg of an International Vaccine Trial to test a new vaccine designed to protect babies against the rotavirus which causes gastroenteritis. Jamaica is one of 12 countries testing the vaccine and over 56,000 infants have been enrolled worldwide. The local trials are being conducted by a team headed by Professor of Paediatrics at the UWI, Dr Celia Christie who says the exercise has been going well.
