Book Launch

The Sir Arthur Lewis Institute for Social and Economic Studies, SALISES will launch two books this week on the Mona Campus. The books are Independent Thought and Caribbean Freedom: Essays in Honour of Lloyd Best edited by Professor Selwyn Ryan of SALISES, St. Augustine Campus; and Deadlock: Ethnicity and Electoral Competition in Trinidad and Tobago 1995- 2002, authored by Professor Ryan. The launch will take place on August 27 starting at 5.30 p.m. in the Multi-functional Room, at the Main Library, UWI, Mona Campus.

Lady Lewis

The University of the West Indies has learned with regret of the death of Lady Lewis at the age of 95, in Castries, St. Lucia. Lady Lewis was the widow of Sir Allen Lewis who served the UWI as Chancellor from 1975 to 1989. The funeral service for Lady Lewis was held on Saturday, August 23 at the Anglican Church, Central Castries, St. Lucia. The UWI extends condolences to the family and friends of Lady Lewis.

Orientation for New Students at UWI Mona

The full orientation programme for new students at UWI Mona will begin on Monday, August 25 in the Assembly Hall at Mona. The sessions begin at 9:00 a.m. and at 9:15 there will be a presentation on the History of the UWI while at 9:45 new students will learn how to make the most of the University. This will be followed by a presentation on Student Financing and Budgeting. On Thursday, August 28, there will be a live broadcast of Laing and Company on Power 106 FM beginning at 2:00 p.m. during the session The Role of Sports in Students Learning and Development.

Sir Arthur Lewis Institute

The Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES) will host the new MSc. cohort at an Open House/Information Day on Tuesday, August 26 in the Institute’s Conference Room 1 at 1:30 p.m. The Open House/ Information Day is organized for new and prospective students to the three programmes that are offered by the Institute, namely, Economic Development, Social Policy and Governance and Public Policy to facilitate them in making the right course selection and a chance to meet the Faculty, Administrative and Technical Support staff of the Institute.

Universities receives Books from Alcoa Foundation, USA

The JAMALCO Bauxite Company has given the island’s three Universities - University of the West Indies, (UWI), The University of Technology (UTech) and Northern Caribbean University, a number of reference books for use in their Libraries. The reference books are gifts from the Alcoa Foundation, USA. Local educational institutions have been benefitting from Alcoa Foundation’s assistance for the past 14 years.

UWIDEC Orientation Sessions

The UWI Distance Education Centre (UWIDEC) will host orientation sessions for its students from Monday August 25 to Thursday, August 28. Students are asked to note that these sessions are compulsory and that distance students are expected to participate in orientation via teleconference from their respective Distance Education Centres. Both new and returning students might be required to remain after the orientation session to complete registration. Intra-Jamaican students registering online should consult their site coordinator about the relevant arrangements.

Commissioner of India Visited the Biotechnology Centre

His Excellency, Mr. Inder Vir Chopra, High Commissioner of India visited the Biotechnology Centre at UWI Mona on July 30. He participated in discussions about the UWI’s possible collaboration in Biotechnology with India’s leading scientific institutions. Professor M. H. Ahmad, Director of the Centre, indicated his willingness to develop a Biotechnology project focusing on the Indigenous Medicinal Plants of Jamaica.

Mary Seacole Hall Alumnae Association

The Mary Seacole Hall Alumni Association, UWI Mona will host a Benefit Performance of the Basil Dawkins Play “God Bless” on September 7, 2003 at the Little Theatre, Tom Redcam Avenue in Kingston. The performance will start at 5:00 p.m. Proceeds will go towards funding scholarships for present students living on Mary Seacole Hall. Tickets are on sale at Monarch Pharmacy in the Sovereign Centre, Liguanea and at the Office of Placement and Career Services at UWI Mona, telephone 927-1650 or 935-8224.

Memorial Service for Professor Emeritus Girgis “George Sidrak

The UWI will host a Memorial Service for Professor Emeritus Girgis “George Sidrak on Thursday, August 21 at 2:00 p.m. at the University Chapel, Mona. A former Professor of Botany in the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences, Professor Sidrak gave distinguished service to the UWI for some 36 years between 1960 and 1996. Members of the University community, former students, friends and colleagues from the wider society are invited to attend.

Mr. Rafi Ahmad

Mr. Rafi Ahmad, Lecturer in the Department of Geography and Geology, UWI, Mona has been recognized by the International Landslide Research Group for nearly 15 years of Leadership in Landslide Hazard Reduction in the Caribbean. The Landslide Research Group in its citation lauded Mr. Ahmad for his outreach to and education of scientists, students, policy makers and the public. It notes that his contribution has been invaluable to the preparation and planning of communities in Jamaica and throughout the region.
