NHSJ Concert

The Natural History Society of Jamaica (NHSJ), will present Orrett Rhoden (Piano) with Guest, Violinist and Composer, Virginia – Gene Rittenhouse in a post Carnegie Hall Recital. This will take place on Sunday, November 2 at 5:00 p.m. at the University Chapel, Mona Campus. Patrons of the Recital are the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany, His Excellency Dr. Christian Hausmann and Mrs. Harriet Huber. Tickets are adults $800, students with identification $500 and children under 12, $400 and are available at Music Mart, Twin Gates; Mobile Music, Lane Plaza and at the gate.

Professor Emeritus Errol Hill – 1921 - 2003

The University of the West Indies has learned with regret of the death on September 15 of Professor Emeritus Errol Hill, renowned scholar, academic and director. Professor Hill who was awarded the Honorary Doctor of Letters (DLitt) in 1998 by the University of the West Indies served the UWI for many years in various capacities.

Public Lecture on Cultural Integration between Jamaica and Colombia

Dr Dario Henao, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Dr Fabio Martínez, novelist and author of the book JORGE ISAACS, both from the Universidad del Valle in Cali, Colombia will present on “CULTURAL INTEGRATION BETWEEN JAMAICA AND COLOMBIA: JORGE ISAACS AND HIS NOVEL MARIA” at a Public Lecture on Tuesday, October 14 at 6.30 pm in the Multifunctional Room at the Main Library on the Mona Campus. The event is being coordinated by the Latin American-Caribbean Centre (LACC) in collaboration with the Embassy of Colombia.

Sir George Alleyne is New Chancellor

The Council of the University of the West Indies, meeting in extraordinary session on Friday, September 26 unanimously endorsed the recommendation of the Joint Committee of Council and Senate to appoint as the next Chancellor, Sir George Alleyne, succeeding Sir Shridath Ramphal who will proceed on retirement on September 30, 2003. Sir George Alleyne, a Barbadian national, was a two term Director-General of the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) and is currently heading a special Commission to combat HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean region.

Study Skills Workshops

The Counselling Service of the UWI Health Centre is once again offering new students a series of Study Skills Workshops each Thursday afternoon until October 16. The workshops are designed to help students excel in their academics. The next workshop will be held on Thursday, October 2 between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. The topic will be Note Taking. The venue is the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre, N1, Faculty of Humanities and Education. All new students are invited to attend.

The School of Continuing Studies – Two new short Course

The School of Continuing Studies (SCS), University of the West Indies has developed two short courses in Mathematics and English. These courses are aimed at adult learners who are preparing to pursue tertiary level studies, but who have some crucial shortfalls in their qualifications for matriculation.

Third Annual Peter Tosh Symposium

The Third Annual Peter Tosh Symposium commences at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts, UWI on Saturday, October 11 from 11:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The theme of this year’s symposium is The Poetics in Peter Tosh’s Music. Presentations will include performances by poets Oku Onura, Mutabaruka, Cherry Natural, Yasus Afari, Neto Meeks, Brian Meeks, Kingsley Stewart (Ragashanti), Ibo Cooper, Amina Blackwood-Meeks, Che, The I Am and Marsha Hall.

Two Economics Students Receive Scholarships

Two students from the Department of Economics, UWI Mona are the recipients of the G. Arthur Brown Memorial Scholarship 2003 and the Thomas De La Rue Scholarship 2003, respectively. They are Evon Mullings and Andre Haughton. Each award is for J$250,000.00 per annum. The scholarships, which are for two years each, took effect from September, 2003. Recipients were awarded based on their first year, full-time status in the M.Sc. Economics Degree Programme. Renewal is based on satisfactory academic performance and general conduct as certified by the University.

UWIHARP Business and Scientific Meeting

Leaders of the University of the West Indies HIV/AIDS response Programme (UWIHARP) attended its first Business and Scientific meeting from September 12 – 13. Members of UWIHARP from all three campuses reported on what had been accomplished so far in the UWI’s response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the Caribbean region.
