Computer Training for New Students

The Mona Information Technology Services Department (MITS), will be hosting Computer Training Courses for new students at UWI, Mona from September 1 to 5. The sessions are designed to assist students who are not familiar with using computers to increase their knowledge and skills level quickly ahead of the new academic year. The sessions will be held in the Life Sciences Laboratory, Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences and the Library Studies Laboratory in the Faculty of Humanities and Education. Two sessions are held daily starting at 9:00 a.m. and at 1:30 p.m.

Department of Modern Languages and Literatures Courses

The Department of Modern Languages & Literatures at UWI Mona is offering a number of courses in French during the new academic year. The courses include French Language 1 and 2, Introduction to French Literature and Introduction to African and Caribbean Literature in French. The Department is encouraging persons who have never learnt French and those who may have been introduced to the language or have taken CXC French to register for one of these courses. Inaugural Lecture

Dr. Omkar Parshad, Professor of Endocrinology in the Department of Basic Medical Sciences, Faculty of Medical Sciences will deliver his Inaugural Address on Friday, September 26. The Lecture, which will take place in the Main Medical Lecture Theatre, University Hospital at 5:00 p.m. is entitled “Know your Thyroid”. The public is invited.

Matriculation and Welcome Ceremony

The 2003/4 Matriculation and Welcome Ceremony for new students at the Mona Campus will be held on Thursday, September 18 in the Assembly Hall beginning at 4:00 p.m. The President of the Guild of Students will greet the new students, there will be a welcome address by the Principal of the Campus, Professor Kenneth Hall and remarks by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Rex Nettleford. At this ceremony, one of the new students will on behalf of the new students sign the Matriculation Register and the University Singers will perform.

New E-mail Addresses

As a part of the drive to provide more robust and reliable information technology solutions to the UWI Mona Campus, Mona Information Technology Services (MITS) will be formally rolling out the Campus’s Portal (provided through Campus Pipeline) on Sunday, September 21. As of this date, users will not be able to read mail sent to their old email addresses directly from within their legacy accounts. However, this mail will not be lost rather, all mail will be automatically forwarded to the users new email address.

Office of Student Services

Application forms for the 2003/2004 UWI Quality Leadership and Mentorship Programmes are now available at the Office of Student Services and may be collected during office hours 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Online Survey

The Quality Assurance Unit in the Office of the Board of Undergraduate Studies at UWI Mona is conducting an online survey among UWI Mona students. All students who are registering for the new academic year are asked to complete the questionnaire, which is on the UWI Mona website. The questionnaire focuses on the provisions made at UWI with respect to admissions, registration and orientation. By completing this questionnaire students will help administrators, faculty members, student leaders and others to improve the conditions that contribute to their learning and development.

Paediatric and Perinatal HIV/AIDS

The Faculty of Medical Sciences at UWI Mona will host a mini-symposium titled “Paediatric and Perinatal HIV/AIDS in Jamaica” on Monday, September 1 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The venue is the Main Lecture Theatre, Faculty of Medical Sciences. Presenters will include Dr. Maggie Feeney of Harvard University and Dr. Philip Goulder Oxford, University along with local faculty from UWI and the Jamaican Ministry of Health. The mini-symposium is part of an outcomes-based research programme funded in part by the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, the Ministry of Health and the UWI.

Registration Week

The official registration period for new and returning students of UWI Mona will run from Monday, September 1 to Friday, September 5. During this period students may use the online registration facility to register from any computer anywhere in Jamaica and the world. Students may go online after seeking academic counseling, choose their courses and submit these electronically to the Deans of the Faculties in which they are registering for approval. Approval will be given online.

UWI Distinguished Lecture

Dr. Aloo Asotsi Mojola, lecturer in Linguistics at the University of Kenya and Africa Inter-Regional Translation Coordinator of the United Bible Societies will deliver a Distinguished Lecture on “Translation of the Bible into African Languages”. The Lecture will take place on Tuesday, September 16 beginning at 5:00 p.m. at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts.
