Orientation Programme for New Students

The Orientation Programme for new students attending the UWI Mona Campus will begin on Sunday, August 24, with a session for the parents and spouses of new students. The session will include presentations from members of the campus administration, including deans of faculties, representatives of student services, the security services, bursary personnel, members of the counselling unit and Guild of Students representatives. It will begin at 8:30 a.m. with registration and continue until 5:00 p.m.

The Department of Advanced Nursing Education

The Department of Advanced Nursing Education hosted a workshop and related activities, from July 23 to August 1, aimed at assessing its capacity to educate and train Caribbean nurses at the undergraduate and graduate levels via distance mode. The workshop was organised based on a proposal submitted by Dr. Hermi Hewitt, Head of the Department at the CARICOM/PAHO/ Canadian Partnership in Health and Human Resource and Nursing Workforce forum convened in Barbados, November 2002. The Jamaican Language Schools Literary Competition

The UWI’s Planning Unit for Jamaican Language, the Department of Language, Linguistics and Philosophy in collaboration with the Department of Literatures in English launched the Jamaican Language Schools Literary Competition on Wednesday, August 14. The competition which has received the support of the Ministry of Education, aims to encourage creative writing in the language, which the children know best, Jamaican. It is being guided by the fact that literacy skills are best developed first in the native language, which for most children in Jamaica is Jamaican.

The Mona Campus Beautification Programme

The Mona Campus has embarked on another phase of its beautification programme involving the planting of trees and shrubs in various locations on the Campus. It has been brought to the attention of the Campus authorities that unauthorized persons have been removing some of these plants. The administration is therefore advising these persons that removing the plants is a breach of section 13 of the UWI (Mona Campus) Security Act. Persons caught in this unlawful activity will therefore be dealt with in accordance with the sanctions specified in this act.

The Rotary Club of Kingston Downtown Rotary Foundation Scholarships

The Rotary Club of Kingston, Downtown is inviting students to apply for the Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship. Three (3) types of scholarships are available. They are the Academic-Year Ambassadorial Scholarship which provides funding for one academic year of study in another country, the Multi-Year Ambassadorial Scholarships which provide funding for two years of degree studies in another country and the Cultural Ambassadorial Scholarships which are for either three or six months of intensive language and cultural immersion in another country.

English Language Proficiency Test Results

New and prospective students of UWI Mona who sat the 2003/2004 English Language Proficiency Test are advised that the results of the test have been posted on the notice board by the New Education Lecture Theatre in the Faculty of Arts and Education. Rural candidates can also get their results at the following locations: Bethlehem Teacher’s College, Malvern; Brown’s Town Community College, Brown’s Town; Church Teachers’ College Mandeville; Denbigh Comprehensive High School, May Pen; and Montego Bay Community College, Montego Bay.

Guild of Students EAC Chair Attends International Meeting

Rhys D. Campbell, External Affairs Chairman 2003-2004, for the UWI Guild of Students, represented the Guild at the Annual Council Meeting and Seminar of the International Union of Students (IUS) from August 5 to 9 in Montreal, Canada. National Honours & Awards

The UWI, Mona Campus congratulates graduates and members of staff who were named to receive honours and awards to mark Jamaica’s 41st Anniversary of Independence. Honorary UWI graduate, Jimmy Cliff was appointed as a member of the Order of Merit for his outstanding contribution to Jamaica’s film and music industry. Head of the Institute of Education at UWI Mona and Chairman of the Electoral Advisory Committee, Professor Errol Miller and part-time Senior Lecturer in the Department of Language, Linguistics and Philosophy, Dr. Oswald Harding were appointed members of the Order of Jamaica.

The Jamaican Language Schools Literary Competition

The UWI’s Planning Unit for Jamaican Language, the Department of Language, Linguistics and Philosophy in collaboration with the Department of Literatures in English will launch the Jamaican Language Schools Literary Competition in recognition of the life and work of the Hon. Louise Bennett-Coverley (Miss Lou), on Wednesday, August 13 at 11:00 a.m. at the Undercroft, UWI Mona. This competition will be run nationally and will be open to school children of Grades 5 and 6 right across Jamaica. It will be an annual event, beginning in the academic year 2003-04.
