Public Forum on Emancipation Park Monument

In celebration of Heritage Week, the Reggae Studies Unit at the University of the West Indies, Mona, is hosting a public forum on “Redemption Song”, the prize winning monument to emancipation from slavery, 1838, erected in the Emancipation Park. Panelists include Dr. David Boxer, Director Emeritus/Chief Curator of the National Gallery; Petrina Dacres, Assistant Curator, The National Gallery; Kamau Kambui, Architect of Emancipation Park; Dr. Alfred Sangster, Educator; Mutabaruka, public intellectual; and Barbara Blake Hanna, Journalist.

The UWI/UNESCO Caribbean Universities Project for Integrated Distance Education

The UWI/UNESCO Caribbean Universities Project for Integrated Distance Education, (CUPIDE) has engaged the services of Ronald Nicholas, a consultant with the US-based company, HGM Management & Technologies Inc. for a period of five months. Mr. Nicholas will seek to establish base-line data on distance education programme needs common to the five universities participating in the project, the learning styles of Caribbean tertiary level students, and the human resource requirements at each of the universities for the delivery of electronically enhanced distance education programmes.

12th Annual Research Conference

Ageing: A Life Course Perspective is the theme of the 12th Annual Research Conference and Workshop which will be staged by the Faculty of Medical Sciences at the UWI, Mona Campus from November 12-14. The opening ceremony for the conference takes place on Wednesday, November 12 at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre, beginning at 5:30 p.m. One highlight of the ceremony will be the delivery of the Kenneth Standard Distinguished lecture by Dr. Alexandre Kalache, Chief, Ageing and Health Promotion at the World Health Organisation.

Advent Fellowship

The Advent Fellowship, Mona Campus will host a trip to the Blue Mountain from Friday, October 17 to Sunday, October 19. The cost is $500. For further information please contact alex.knight@uwimona.edu.jm The Advent Fellowship will hold Chapel Day on November 1, beginning at 9:00 a.m.

Central Africa in the Caribbean

The Department of Literatures in English in association with The University of the West Indies Press and the Institute of Caribbean Studies invites you the Book Launch of “Central Africa in the Caribbean: Transcending Time, Transforming Cultures” by Professor Maureen Warner-Lewis on Thursday, October 16 at 6:00 p.m. at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre, UWI. The speaker will be Professor Barry Chevannes, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences. This will be followed by a Talk on “The Central African Heritage of Jamaica” given by Professor Warner Lewis.

Dr. Glenroy Martin

Dr. Glenroy Martin has been awarded a Post-doctoral position at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego. He will take up the position in November. Dr. Martin recently completed his PhD in Organic Chemistry. He is a former postgraduate representative of the School for Graduate Studies and Research.

Film Screening

Roman Polanski's powerful and moving film, The Pianist, recounts the true story of a celebrated young musician, Wladyslaw Szpilman, who survived the Holocaust by hiding in Nazi-occupied Warsaw. This critically acclaimed film won the Palme d'Or (Cannes Film Festival 2002), six French Cesars (2003) and three Academy Awards (2003), among other international critics' prizes. It will be screened in the Round Room of the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts on Thursday October 16 from 2-5pm. A question and answer session will follow the screening with Dr.

IDU Lunch Hour Discussions

The Instructional Development Unit, UWI Mona will host a series of Lunch Hour Discussions each Thursday, between October 9 and December 4 focusing on Course Design. The discussions will be presented in four parts and are designed to familiarize participants with the process of designing and evaluating courses. The next series will be on October 22 and the focus will be on Developing Course Objectives from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Other topics in the series will be Translating Objectives through Materials Selection on November 6 from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Minister of Education Visits UWI Library

Minister of Education, Youth and Culture, The Hon. Maxine Henry Wilson, visited the UWI Library recently. On a brief tour of the facility, in the company of the Campus and Deputy Campus Librarians, she observed students throughout the Library and in the Mona Electronic Resource Information Centre (MERIC), in particular, busily accessing electronic resources such as databases, digitized articles, and the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC).

Solid Foundation

The Reggae Studies Unit presents a lecture by David Katz, entitled Tracing the Roots of Jamaican Music on Friday, October 17 at 5:00 p.m. in the Inter-Faculty Lecture Theatre. His latest book, Solid Foundation: An Oral History of Reggae will also be launched. Katz, a musician, broadcaster and photographer – is the author of the best selling biography People Funny Boy: The Genius of Lee “Scratch” Perry”.
