International Summer School Programme

Six international students are now completing an international summer school programme offered at UWI Mona. Organized by the Office of Administration and Special Initiatives, the summer school this year offers students the opportunity to participate in a course called Caribbean Culture and Society from July 14 to August 2. Three of the students are from the Clark Atlanta University in Georgia; two are from the University of Memphis while one is from the Bahamas. UWI Signs Memorandum of Understanding

The UWI, through its School of Continuing Studies is to sign a memorandum of understanding with the Brown’s Town Community College with respect to the franchising of the university’s generic Bachelor of Science Nursing degree programme. The signing, which takes place Tuesday, July 29, at Mona, follows the college’s formal request to the university to deliver the UWI’s generic Nursing degree programme which is administered by the Department of Advanced Nursing Education, Faculty of Medical Sciences.

Emancipation Lectures

Two lecturers in the Department of History, Faculty of Humanities and Education, UWI, Mona will deliver special Emancipation Lectures to commemorate Emancipation Day being celebrated on August 1. Dr. Veront Satchell will deliver his lecture at the Bethel Baptist Church, Half Way Tree, Kingston, on Sunday, July 27 at 4:00 p.m. His topic will be "Emancipation and Reparation". Professor Verene Shepherd will deliver two Emancipation Lectures this year. The first will be at the Calvary Baptist Church in Montego Bay on Sunday, July 27 at 4.30 p.m.

Governor General’s Achievement Award

Mr. Milton Pinnock, Lecturer in the Department of Community Health and Psychiatry, Faculty of Medical Sciences at UWI Mona is the recipient of the Governor General’s Achievement Award for the parish of St Andrew. He received the award for contribution to public health and contribution to his community on Wednesday, July 9, at a function held at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel. Mr. Pinnock holds a Master’s Degree and several diplomas and certificates in the fields of Public Health and Administration, Environment, Disaster Preparedness and Management.

Inaugural Lecture

Professor of Surgery in the Department of Surgery, Radiology, Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, J. Michael Branday, will give his inaugural lecture on Thursday, July 31 at 5:00 p.m. The venue is the New Chemistry Lecture Theatre, Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences. Professor Branday, who is also Sub-Dean of Student Affairs in the Faculty of Medical Sciences, will speak on the topic, Physician Training or Medical Education: Is there a difference? Members of the campus community are invited to attend.

Professor Terrence Forrester on Health Commission

Professor Terrence Forrester, Head of the Tropical Medicine Research Institute at UWI Mona has been invited to join a distinguished group of experts on the Caribbean Commission on Health and Development. The Commission, appointed by the CARICOM Secretariat is intended to advance the region’s understanding of macro-economic issues in health development. It was set up to meet the objectives of the Nassau declaration adopted by the CARICOM Heads of Government in July 2001 which states that the health of the region is the wealth of the region.

Alzeheimer’s Disease Workshop

The Department of Community Health & Psychiatry through the Collaborating Centre on Ageing and Action Ageing Jamaica, in collaboration with Florida Health Care Association will be hosting a Training Seminar on Alzheimer’s disease for nurses, doctors, caregivers and families, July 7 – 9. Health care workers excluding doctors should attend Monday 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.; Doctors on Tuesday from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and caregivers and family members on Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The venue is the MPH Building, Department of Community Health & Psychiatry at UWI, Mona.

Chanting Down Babylon

UWI, Mona will conclude its Montego Bay lecture series "The University in the West" with a lecture by Professor Carolyn Cooper, Professor of Literary and Cultural Studies, on Wednesday, July 9 at 5:30 p.m. The lecture is titled More Fire: Chanting Down Babylon from Bob Marley to Capleton. The venue is the St. John’s Methodist Church Hall, Duke Street, Montego Bay. The public is invited to attend.

Country Conference Series Call for Papers

The School of Continuing Studies, UWI will host another in its series of country conferences from November 13 – 15 in Antigua. This year’s conference will be held under the theme Beyond Walls: Multi-Disciplinary Perspectives and will focus on issues relevant to the islands of Antigua & Barbuda. The school is therefore inviting submissions for papers to be presented at the conference from persons with an interest in Antigua & Barbuda.

Debris Flows Harzards and Risks Workshop

The Unit for Disaster Studies in the Department of Geography and Geology, UWI Mona will present a workshop called Mitigation of Debris Flows Hazards and Risks from July 7 – 10. The workshop is open to interested members of the public, including home owners, engineers involved in the construction of roads, culverts and bridges, earth scientists, mining engineers, disaster planners, insurance managers and information specialists. The workshop is part of the UWI summer course, Analysis and Management of Geohazards and Risks and costs $6,500. This includes refreshments and a field trip.
