Galileoscope Project Launched Postponed

The launch of the Galileoscope Project organized by the Department of Physics, UWI, Mona, the Ministry of Education and the Astronomical Association of Jamaica for Thursday, September 30, 2010 has been postponed. A new date will be announced.

The Project will see the distribution of 400 telescopes also known as Galileoscopes to secondary schools across Jamaica in order for the establishment of Astro Clubs. This will serve to improve the teaching of specific topics on the Caribbean Secondary School Examination Council (CSEC) and Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations (CAPE) Physics syllabus and develop awareness of the telescope’s use for the viewing of the wonders of the sky. 

UWI, Mona Hosts Agricultural Science Syllabus Review Workshop

The Science, Mathematics and Information Technology (SMIT) Centre in the Department of Educational Studies at the UWI, Mona will host a workshop on the review of the Caribbean Secondary School Examination Council (CSEC) Agricultural Science syllabus.  The workshop takes place on Friday, September 24, 2010 at 10 am at the Multipurpose Room at the Main Library, UWI, Mona.

Cricket Celebs To Face Off UWI Students In Triple P 20/20

Students at the University of the West Indies are preparing to face cricket legends including the Honourable Courtney Walsh and Jimmy Adams and other noteworthy personalities such as  Trinidadian Minister of Education, Senator the Honourable Dr. Tim Gopeesingh,  in a friendly 20/20 "Triple P" cricket match on October 2 at 12 noon  at the UWI, Mona Bowl.   .

The Alumni team lead by Courtney Walsh will also include university officials such as University Registrar, Mr. William Iton and Director of Sports, UWI Cave Hill, Mr. Roland Butcher.. The UWI student team will consist of members of the UWI cricket team, members of the Mona Guild of Students and representatives from various student organizations and associations.

Sports Awards Ceremony 2010

The Sports Office at UWI, Mona will host its annual Sports Awards Ceremony under the theme, “Celebrating a Spirit for Sports at Mona” The event takes place on Saturday, September 25, 2010 at 7 pm at the Rex Nettleford Hall Multifunctional Room. The guest speaker will be the Pro Vice Chancellor and Principal, Professor Gordon Shirley.

The Ceremony is designed to recognize outstanding athletes who have participated in sporting activities at a competitive level representing the University of the West Indies, Mona during the last academic year.

World Bank Public Lecture

The Mona School of Business at UWI and the World Bank presents a public lecture titled, “Jamaica and the World Bank’s Development Policy Loans, 2009 to 2011- Recession, Restructuring, and Reform.”  The Lecture will be delivered by Dr. Auguste Kouame, World Bank lead economist and sector leader for Poverty Reduction and Economic Management for the Caribbean. The event takes place on Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at 6 pm at the Executive Lecture Theatre at the Sir Alister McIntyre Building, UWI, Mona.

In his Lecture Dr. Kouame will explore the areas of support that were covered under the last two Development Policy Loans (DPLs) granted by the World Bank to Jamaica for budgetary support. A third DPL is being considered for 2011.

The UWI/ UTech Sports Championships

The University of the West Indies, Mona Sports Department partners with the University of Technology (Jamaica) Sports Department to host the inaugural staging of the UWI/ UTech Sports Championship on Saturday, September 18, 2010 starting at 9:30 am at the Mona Bowl. The Championships will feature two teams, UWI Pelicans and the UTech Knights, competing for the top prize in five sporting activities namely: football, netball, cricket, basketball and volleyball.

All are invited to attend. Admission is free. For more details interested persons may contact the UWI, Mona Sports Office at 702-4476.

Anti-Doping in Sport Seminar

The University of the West Indies, Mona in collaboration with Leeds Metropolitan University in the United Kingdom have organized a one-day Anti-Doping in Sport seminar scheduled for Saturday, September 18, 2010 at Physiology Lecture Theatre, UWI, Mona Campus.

Rwanda Reasonings

“Rwanda Reasonings: Gender, Genocide and Democracy” is the title of the public lecture being delivered by Dr. Leith Dunn, sociologist and Head, Institute of Gender and Development Studies (Mona Unit) at UWI. The event takes place on Wednesday, September 15, 2010 at 5 pm at the Undercroft, UWI, Mona and will also serve to commemorate International Democracy Day.

The Lecture will explore issues associated with gender and governance, the Rwandan genocide and economic development. The event follows on Dr. Dunn’s recent visit as part of Commonwealth Elections Observer Group for the Presidential Elections in Rwanda which took place on August 9. In addition a mini exhibition of Rwandan artifacts will be presented.

The public is invited to attend.

Caribbean Climate and Weather Variability: From Climate Change to Hurricanes

The University of the West Indies, Mona through the Departments of Physics and Geography and Geology will host a public lecture entitled, “Caribbean Climate and Weather Variability: From Climate Change to Hurricanes, Dust and More” . The Lecture takes place on Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at 5 pm at Lecture Room A in the Department of Physics, UWI, Mona.

Dr. Mark Jury, Associate Professor in Meteorology, University of Puerto Rico and regional climate scientist specializing climate and weather variability in Caribbean will deliver the Lecture. 

The university community and the public are invited.

UWI, Mona Hosts Matriculation Ceremony for First Year Students

The University of the West Indies, Mona will host its annual Matriculation and Welcome Ceremony for all first year students on Thursday, September 9, 2010 at 4:00 pm in the Assembly Hall, UWI, Mona. All first year students participating in the Ceremony are required to assemble on the lawns facing the Undercroft by 2:30 p.m. for the signing of the Matriculation Register at 2:45 p.m.
