Minister of Education to Speak at 9th ACHEA Conference on July 8-10

Honorable Andrew Holness, Minister of Education will be the guest speaker at the 9th annual conference of the Association of Caribbean Higher Education Administrators (ACHEA) scheduled for July 8-10 at the Sunset Jamaica Grande, Ocho Rios. This year’s Conference is themed, “Reforming Higher Education: Implications for Caribbean Administrators.” The Conference will also feature several noteworthy speakers including: Dr. Jose Renato Carvalho, Director, UNESCO-IESALC, Venezuela, Professor Alvin Wint, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Undergraduate Studies, UWI, Professor Lawrence Carrington, Vice Chancellor, University of Guyana, Dr. Daniel Coore, Head, Department of Computing, UWI, Mona and Dr.
UWI, Mona Initiates Staff Fitness Programme

UWI, Mona through the Sports Department and the Wellness Committee has embarked on a new thrust towards fitness among UWI, Mona employees through the establishment of the UWI Mona Pelican Fitness Club. The initiative is designed to improve the health and wellness of employees, decrease the aging process and promote fitness as a lifestyle among employees. The UWI, Mona Sports Department will coordinate this aspect of the Wellness programme.
Eric Cruickshank Distinguished Lecture 2010

The Department of Medicine, UWI, Mona will host the Professor Eric Cruickshank Distinguished Lecture entitled, "HAM/TSP - 2010 How far have we come?" The lecture will be delivered by Professor the Hon. Owen St. C. Morgan, former Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences. It is scheduled to take place on Friday, June 25, 2010 at 5 pm at the Main Lecture Theatre; located at the University Hospital of the West Indies.

Going Forward to our Rootz

The Department of Literatures in English and the Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work at UWI, Mona will host a Symposium entitled, “Going Forward to our Rootz: Reclaiming the Healing Power of Reggae Music”. The Symposium takes place on Thursday, July 1, 2010 6 pm at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1), UWI, Mona.
The speakers will include academics from UWI, Mona namely: Professor Carolyn Cooper, Dr. Clinton Hutton, Dr. Michael Barnett, radio personality, Mutabaruka and Ras Java Immanuel. The Symposium will explore the healing, calming and restorative power of vintage and classical era Reggae Music for a troubled society.

CSME Essay/ Debating Prize Giving Ceremony

Three UWI, Mona students were named the awardees of the CSME Awareness Week Essay and Debate Competition organized by the UWI Students Today Alumni Tomorrow (UWISTAT) at a recently held prize–giving ceremony at UWI, Mona. Shiva Mohan, postgraduate student in the Department of Geography and Geology copped the prestigious Vice Chancellor CSME Trophy in the Essay Competition. The CSME Debate Competition prize was shared by Krystal Tomlinson and Dexroy Martin both of Taylor Hall The Essay Competition is open to all UWI, Mona students while the Debating Competition is an inter hall competition.
UWI, Mona Hosts International MAM -10 Symposium

The University of the West Indies, Mona will host the "5th IUPAC Sponsored International Symposium on Macro- and Supramolecular Architectures and Materials (MAM-10)" at the Sunset Jamaica Grande Resort and Spa. The Symposium will include a two-day pre-conference workshop and a five-day conference.
The two-day pre-conference workshop entitled, "Advanced materials: Helping to Achieve Millennium Development Goals" is slated for August 13-14, 2010. This workshop will focus on the development and use of advanced materials in achieving the Millennium Development Goals. The pre-conference workshop is designed for public sector and private practitioners and academics.
Book Launch -“Six Jamaican Educators”

“Six Jamaican Educators” is the title of the book written by Professor Hyacinth Evans, Professor of Teacher Education, School of Education, UWI, Mona. The book is being launched on Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 5 pm at the Undercroft, UWI, Mona. It details the contribution of six Jamaican educators who have helped in the development of the Jamaican education system and in providing increased access to secondary and tertiary education for poor Jamaicans from the 1940’s to the 1990’s.
Public Lecture titled “Ethiopia Speaks Jamaican Creole” Now on June 4

“Ethiopia Speaks Jamaican Creole: Voices From Shashamane” is the title of the public lecture being hosted by the Jamaica Language Unit in the Department of Language, Linguistics and Philosophy, UWI, Mona. Dr. Renato Tomei, Research Fellow in English Studies at the University for Foreigners in Perugia, Italy will deliver the Lecture. The Lecture which was postponed due to the limited state of public emergency declared by the Government of Jamaica is now scheduled for Friday, June 4, 2010 at 4 pm at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre, UWI, Mona.
MSME Symposia Series Continues

The UWI, Mona in collaboration with the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce and Jamaica Trade and Invest will host the second symposium in its Series themed, “Creating a Policy Framework for the Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprise (MSME) Sector in the Jamaican Economy.” The Symposium will explore the topic “Two Key Types of Non-Financial Support Needed: Business Development Services (BDS) and Networking and Clustering”. It takes place on Thursday, June 3, 2010.
The Series is aimed at stimulating further discussions among key stakeholders on the policies that are required to foster the growth and development of Jamaica’s micro, small and medium enterprises.
University Singers Concert Season Set to Start on June 9

The 2010 University Singers Concert Season dubbed, “Ode to Prof” in honour of the late Professor Emeritus the Hon. Rex Nettleford has been postponed to June 9, 2010 at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts, UWI, Mona. The Concert which was initially set to begin on May 27 was postponed due to the prevailing security and civil situation affecting the Corporate Area and sections of St. Catherine, along with the imposition of a limited State of Emergency by the Government. The new date is however contingent on an improvement in the security situation and a lifting of the State of Emergency.
