Outreach Programmes at Confucius Institute at UWI, Mona

The official opening of the Confucius Institute at the UWI, Mona took place recently. The major objective of the Confucius Institute at the University of the West Indies, Mona, is to promote the learning of Chinese Language and culture, function as a bridge between the Jamaica and Chinese people, and be a major resource centre for those wishing to learn about China. The Institute seeks an active involvement with the Jamaican community, through several outreach programmes.
Two Publications to be launched at 7th Caribbean Reasonings Conference

The Centre for Caribbean Thought (CCT) hosts the launch of two publications on Friday, October 1, 2010 at 6:30 pm at the Multifunctional Room, Main Library, UWI, Mona. The books, Thought of The New World, The Quest for Decolonisation is the fourth in the Caribbean Reasonings series and is edited by Brian Meeks and Norman Girvan and the second book, Gordon K. Lewis On Race, Class and Ideology in the Caribbean is a collection of writings by the late political sociologist, Gordon K. Lewis.
The launch takes place as part of the 7th Caribbean Reasonings Conference hosted by the CCT under the theme, Freedom and Power in the Caribbean: The Work of Gordon K. Lewis,.
Caribbean Climate and Weather Variability: From Climate Change to Hurricanes

“Caribbean Climate and Weather Variability: From Climate Change to Hurricanes, Dust and More” is the title of the public lecture being hosted by the Departments of Physics and Geography and Geology at the UWI, Mona. The Lecture is scheduled for Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at 5 pm at Lecture Room A in the Department of Physics, UWI, Mona.
Dr. Mark Jury, Associate Professor in Meteorology, University of Puerto Rico and regional climate scientist specializing climate and weather variability in Caribbean will deliver the Lecture.
The university community and the public are invited.
UWI, Mona Hosts Matriculation 2010 Ceremony
The University of the West Indies, Mona will host its annual Matriculation and Welcome Ceremony for all first year students on Thursday, September 9, 2010 at 4:00 pm in the Assembly Hall, UWI, Mona.
A Matriculation Ceremony is the occasion on which new students are formally recognized as members of a university. Their acceptance into the academic community is marked by the signing of the Matriculation Register. New students will be officially met and welcomed by senior management of the University including the Vice Chancellor, Campus Principal, Faculty Deans and the Director of Student Services and Development.
All first year students are required to attend. Members of staff are also invited to share in this occasion with the new students.
Breakfast Series

The Mona School of Business at UWI in collaboration with the Spanish Court Hotel hosts the first lecture in its inaugural Breakfast Lecture Series on Friday, August 20, 2010, at the Spanish Court Hotel starting at 7:30 a.m. The lecture will be delivered by Professor Obika Gray, Professor of Political Science at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Professor Gray is Jamaican-born and the author of a book titled “Demeaned but Empowered: The Social Power of the Urban Poor in Jamaica”.
The Series is aimed at discussing topical issues among key stakeholders in a bid to arrive at practical solutions. The Lecture will feature international experts of Jamaican descent.
UWI, Mona Hosts Orientation 2010 on August 23-24
The University of the West Indies, Mona hosts Orientation 2010 over two days, August 23-24, 2010. The event begins on Monday, August 23 at 10 am with an Opening Ceremony at the Assembly Hall, UWI, Mona. Orientation 2010 will entail interesting discussions, campus tours, rap sessions and an entertainment extravaganza. All first year students are invited to attend.
The Orientation activities are designed to familiarize first year students with the University campus, student development programmes and activities. It will also assist students in adjusting to university experience.
Dr. Bewaji Receives The Guggenheim Fellowship

Dr. John Bewaji, Lecturer, Department of Language, Linguistics and Philosophy has been named a Fellow of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. He has been awarded the prestigious fellowship to further his research in the area of Africana philosophy: a critical engagement which starts in August 2010.
Orientation for FSS Weekend Degree Programmes
The Faculty of Social Sciences (FSS) Weekend Degree Programmes at the University of the West Indies, Mona hosts its Orientation and Registration session on Saturday, August 14, 2010 between 9 am and 5 pm at GLT 3, Sir Alister McIntyre Building. Persons who have been accepted to pursue the Weekend degree option of the Bachelor of Science in Management Studies in General, Accounting and Banking and Finance are invited to attend. The session will feature presentations on various topics such health and wellness and financing, provide information on course selection and familiarize students with the learning platform, OurVLE.

Courtney Walsh to Participate in Triple P 20/ 20 Celebrity Alumni Cricket Match

The UWI Students Today Alumni Tomorrow (UWISTAT at Mona hosts a celebrity cricket match on Saturday, October 2, 2010 at the Sir Frank Worrell cricket pitch at Mona Bowl dubbed, “Triple P 20/20”. The Match seeks to encourage camaraderie and build loyalty among UWI staff and alumni. The event is endorsed by former West Indies cricketer, the Hon. Courtney Walsh, also an alumnus of the UWI, who will head the alumni team in a friendly match slated to start at 2 pm. The match is expected to raise funds for the UWI Mona Regional Endowment Fund, and the student project ‘FOOTPRINTS’.
Rastafari Studies Conference at UWI, Mona Marks 50th Anniversary of the Rastafari Report

“Negotiating the African Presence: Rastafari Livity and Scholarship” is the theme of the Rastafari Studies Conference being hosted by The University of the West Indies, Mona on August 17-20, 2010. The Conference is earmarked to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the publication of the Report on the Rastafari Movement in Kingston, Jamaica authoured by the late M. G. Smith, Professor Emeritus Roy Augier and the late Professor the Honourable Rex Nettleford. The Report marked a turning point in the relations between the Rastafari community and the wider Jamaican society. To this extent the work being celebrated is unmatched with regard to its landmark intervention and recommendations, which included the exploration of repatriation to Africa.
