Master of Public Health Class 2010 Hosts Magazine Launch

The 2009/ 10 Class of Master of Public Health in Community Health and Psychiatry has organized a Magazine Launch on Wednesday, July 21, 2010 at 6 pm at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre Dr. Sonia Copeland will be the guest speaker on the occasion.
The magazine is the first of its kind from the Department of Community Health and Psychiatry and is being done as part of a project for the Health Promotions Class. The magazine dubbed, “Health Vibes: Live It, Love It” features several articles addressing topics including: healthy eating, exercise, traditional medicine among other health issues. The magazine also highlights the 25th anniversary of the Master of Public Health Programme.
Ninth William Dennis Memorial Lecture
The ninth annual William Dennis Memorial Lecture is scheduled for Thursday, July 22, 2010 at 5 pm at the Main Lecture Theatre, located at the University Hospital of the West Indies and features two presentations. This year’s lecture will be delivered by, renowned nursing educator, Director and Head, UWI School of Nursing (UWISON) and Vice Chancellor’s Award for Excellence recipient, Dr Hermi Hewitt. Her lecture is entitled “Transforming Nursing Education to Meet the Clinical and Health Needs of Persons in a Dynamic Environment”. The second lecture will be delivered by Dr. Barrington Davidson, Family Counselor and Founder of Family Life Ministries. He will share on the topic “Teaching Parents to Build Self Esteem in Their Children”.
UWI Students to Participate in CAC Games

Three UWI, Mona students have been selected to represent Jamaica at the Central America and Caribbean (CAC) Games on July 22, 28, 2010 in Puerto Rico. The students are: Tanice Barnett who will participate in the 1500 m, Hansel Parchment who will compete in the 110 m hurdle and Darrel Garwood in High Jump. The students were selected based on their performance in the National Athletic Championship.
Japanese Reggae/Dancehall Lecture

"Locating the Japanese and the Jamaican in Japanese Reggae/Dancehall" is the titled of the public lecture being hosted by the Department of Literatures in English, UWI, Mona on Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at 6 pm at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1), UWI, Mona. The Lecture will be delivered by Dr. Noriko Manabe, Assistant Professor of Musicology at Princeton University while on a research visit to Jamaica to work on a book on musical subcultures in Japan, including the reggae/dancehall scene.
Her Lecture will explore the perceived similarities between Japanese and Jamaican Patios, the global appeal of reggae/ dancehall and the history of Japanese reggae/dancehall.

Professor Samms-Vaughan Among Five Named for the Prestigious Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Excellence, 2010
Professor Maureen Samms-Vaughan, Professor of Child Health, Child Development and Behaviour, Department of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Child Health has been named one of the five recipients of the prestigious Vice Chancellor’s Award for Excellence for 2010. Professor Samms-Vaughan will be recognized for her Contribution to Public Service. The award for the prestigious Vice Chancellor’s Award for Excellence for the academic year 2009/2010 will be presented at a special ceremony to be held on October 21, 2010 at the Cave Hill Campus. The Awards will be presented by the Vice Chancellor.
Confucius Institute Unveiling at UWI, Mona
The Unveiling of the Plaque of the Confucius Institute at the UWI, Mona will take place on Monday, July 19, 2010. The Institute will operate in partnership with the Taiyuan University of Technology in China.
CARIMAC Hosts Summer Programme “Just for Teens”

The year-round short courses programme at the Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC), UWI, Mona is broadening its offerings this summer with courses and workshops in a special offering dubbed “Just for Teens” from July 5-30, 2010.
The special one month offering will include a range of short courses such as: Graphic Design, Website Design, Voice and Speech Training, Digital Photography and Digital Storytelling. CARIMAC will also introduce a CAPE Communication Studies workshop between July 19 and 30. The workshop will focus on the subject's writing and speaking components.
Rex Nettleford Hall Stages First Step: Karibbean Kamp 2010

The Rex Nettleford Hall stages its second annual “Karibbean Kamp” from July 5-30, 2010 on Monday to Friday at 8 am-3 pm daily at the Rex Nettleford Hall, UWI, Mona. The Camp offers a range of academic and co-curricular activities for children and teenagers. Offerings include subjects geared towards students intending to sit the Caribbean Examination Council in core courses including: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Information Technology and English Language. In addition the Camp provides early preparation for students who will sit the Grade Six Achievement Test. Co-curricular offerings will supplement the academics provided and include: swimming, art and craft, dance and music with the camp culminating with a Student Talent Fair and Grand Fair.
Robotics Summer Camp at UWI, Mona

The Department of Basic Medical Sciences, Biochemistry Section, UWI, Mona and Jamaica Technology will partner to organize a “Robotics” Summer Camp from July 12-17, 2010. The camp is designed for children, 8-16 years. It covers the basics of electronic structure and components and will enhance the interpersonal dynamics and team building skills of participants. At the end of the Camp students will be introduced to the assembly of hardware parts for robots, design robots using Mindstorm and build and test electronic robots.

“Rock Star” Camp 2010 at UWI, Mona

The Department of Geography and Geology presents a “Rock Star” Camp on July 19-23, 2010 under the theme, “Practical Geography”. The 2010 Camp is geared towards high school students in grades 9-11. Topics being covered in the camp include: map reading, introduction to GIS, basic research and fossils. The event culminates with a presentation of the work done by the students. Other Camps will be offered by the Department throughout the summer for primary aged children between August 9-20.
