BSc Mathematics with Education Studies

Programme Overview

This BSc Programme in Mathematics with Education Studies allows participants to study a wide range of Mathematics topics, together with some education orientated work.

Mathematics is studied in depth to bring participants’ expertise up to degree-level, while also learning how to teach mathematics to a standard that leads to trained graduate status.

The courses in the programme cover the central ideas and developments of pure and applied mathematics and offers opportunities to engage in field-work in schools. Consequently, it offers an ideal start for anyone wanting to pursue a mathematics teaching career by consolidating and extending ones mathematical skills. Simultaneously, enough experience is gained in schools as the education studies side of the degree involves both the practical side of teaching and the theoretical aspects of the profession.

Mathematics education has long been a government priority. This unique degree course will give the student an understanding of how people learn mathematics, and an insight into different teaching approaches. Designed primarily with teachers – or aspiring teachers – in mind, it will develop ones knowledge and understanding of the teaching of mathematics, and broaden the participants’ ideas about how people learn and use mathematics.
