Mona School of Business and Management (MSBM) through the Professional Services Unit will introduce a Data Protection Officer Certification Course to offer a comprehensive understanding of the role of a Data Protection Officer (DPO) as prescribed by the Jamaican Data Protection Act. The course which will be offered online is scheduled for a six week period beginning July 18, 2023 through to August 8, 2023.

Offered in conjunction with Design Privacy, the course will be led by Chukwuemeka Cameron, Founder and experienced Attorney with a demonstrated history of working in regulatory compliance in the Telecom and Financial Industry. He is skilled in Privacy Law, Commercial Law and Copyright law and in 2019 completed an advanced Master Class training as a Data Protection Officer from an ISO certified provider IT Governance UK in the United Kingston.

The course is designed primarily for business executives, legal professionals, IT experts, risk managers, and university students who aspire to enhance their earning capacity by acquiring the requisite skills to become Data Protection Officers. Participants will gain the necessary skills and tools to assist companies in confidently preparing for registration with the Office of the Information Commissioner and implementing effective data protection compliance frameworks.

In providing a context for the seminar, Ms Diane Edwards, Director, Professional Services Unit stated “MSBM is pleased to partner with an expert like Chukwuemeka Cameron and Design Privacy to offer a high level course to Data Protection Officers (DPO), to equip them to handle all the issues concerning the handling of personal data that will emerge from the coming into force of the Data Protection Act on December 1, 2023.  At MSBM, we are concerned that all companies may not be aware of the mandatory need to appoint a DPO and have such officers trained in the provisions of the Act and we feel that our partnership will go a long way to ensuring companies have the right information to become compliant. This is even more critical for companies intending to engage in international commerce. We look forward to a great response from the public and to delivering more executive education tailored to the needs of our customers."

The key objectives of the course are to (i) Raise awareness about the Jamaican Data Protection Act, (ii) Provide skills to implement data protection systems (iii) Build  competencies that enable companies to qualify for registration with the Office of the Information Commissioner  and (iv) Acquire skills to implement data protection systems and procedures within their respective companies.

The Data Protection Officer Certification Course offered by MSBM is a remarkable opportunity for professionals to understand the Jamaican Data Protection Act and its practical implications. By participating in this course, individuals will acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to navigate the complexities of data protection, thereby enhancing their professional profile and career prospects.
