Professor Sir Hilary Beckles honoured by American Peers

The American Historical Association has voted to select Vice-Chancellor of The University of the West Indies (The UWI), Professor Sir Hilary Beckles as its Honorary Foreign Scholar for 2023.  The Association has annually recognised a foreign scholar since 1885, and the list includes the most acclaimed international historians. The UWI announces Dr Beverly-Anne Carter’s Professorship

The Office of Administration at The University of the West Indies (The UWI) is pleased to recognise the Professorship appointment of Dr Beverly-Anne Carter who retired in October 2022.

Professor Carter earned her promotion to the highest academic rank at the institution following a rigorous assessment process by independent external assessors, which included evaluation of the quality and quantity of her research, publications, and other professional activities, including enhancement of the University’s reputation. Her appointment took effect during the last quarter of 2022.

Monthly historic parish hikes, sharing scholarship through lectures and other learning activities, as well as an educational bus tour on Emancipation Day are among a raft of yearlong outreach activities planned to mark the 60th anniversary of The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus which dovetails with the regional University’s 75th anniversary. Cave Hill, the third landed campus of The UWI community, opened in 1963 at a temporary location at the Deep-Water Harbour, before moving to its current location in 1967.

In furtherance of its strategic agenda and vision as a global university rooted in the Caribbean, The University of the West Indies (The UWI), announces the appointment of its new Pro Vice-Chancellor (PVC) Global Affairs, Sandrea Maynard, LLB (Hons) LLM, SFHEA, PgCHE. PVC Maynard, whose appointment became effective on January 1, 2023, will lead the regional university’s global engagement portfolio and coordinate all internationalisation and strategic global initiatives across The UWI system.

Friday January 6, 2023—“The 75th anniversary of The University of the West Indies is about to be a magnificent year.” These sentiments came from Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles as well as University Registrar and Chief Administrative Officer, Dr. Maurice D. Smith during a media briefing held on Friday January 6, to launch the University’s 75th anniversary being commemorated throughout 2023.

This year marks 75 years since the official opening of its first UWI Campus in Mona, Jamaica.
