UWI affiliated entrepreneurs and small-medium sized enterprises (SMEs) to partner on the UWI’s 75th Anniversary Signature Collection

To mark its 75th anniversary (1948-2023), The University of the West Indies has made a call for indigenous entrepreneurs and small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) to partner with the University on a UWI 75th Anniversary Signature Collection.

The initiative, part of the year-long celebration under the theme: UWI at 75. Rooted. Ready. Rising, aims to support the discovery and promotion of Caribbean creatives and entrepreneurs from among The UWI’s staff, student and alumni populations.

The UWI and the University of Jinan move to strengthen collaboration, international student exchange

When Professor Liu Zongming, the President of the University of Jinan in Shandong Province, China, sat down at a meeting in Kingston on Wednesday with Professor Dale Webber, Pro-Vice               Chancellor and Principal of The UWI, Mona Campus, they connected through interpreters.

But if both men have their way, in a few short years more Jamaican and Chinese students will be able to communicate using their language of choice.

UWI Researchers cop US $300,000 to study nature-based coastal solutions

Researchers at The University of the West Indies (The UWI) are pleased to have secured US $300,000 to conduct much needed research into designing sustainable, nature-based coastal solutions. The grant by Future Earth will fund research in Trinidad & Tobago, USA, Barbados and Jamaica aimed at generating a more universal approach to the design specification of nature-based solutions, making them more widely applicable.

Five new Professors named at The UWI

The University of the West Indies’, Office of Administration has announced five new professors. The experts are among the world’s best in the fields of electrochemistry; climate change; renewable energy; mental health (Psychiatry) and agriculture research.

Their excellence in teaching and research and their notable contributions to UWI activism – tackling the big problems facing the Caribbean have warranted their promotion to the institution’s highest academic rank.

UWI scientists' genomic surveillance research of SARS-CoV-2 featured in PLOS Global Public Health Journal

A team of scientists from The University of the West Indies (The UWI) is featured in the PLOS Global Public Health Journal for its work on genomic surveillance research in the Caribbean.

The journal article, published in February 2023, details how the team’s work propelled the Caribbean out of the pathogen genomic surveillance starting blocks and thus facilitated better understanding and control of SARS-CoV-2 in the region.

The regional UWI community is saddened by the news of the passing of retired Campus Registrar of its Cave Hill Campus, Andrew Gordon Lewis, one of the Campus's foundation students who went on to become a leading and much revered administrator at the institution.

The Cave Hill stalwart whose career at The University of the West Indies spanned over 25 years, is fondly remembered for his dedication to the institution, masterful planning, avid mentorship, gentle manner, infectious laughter, and as a campus "icon" and "a true giant in the Cave Hill pantheon."
