The UWI now multi-lingual

After in-depth internal strategic planning and discussion with regional education stakeholders, The UWI has finally evolved as a ‘multi-lingual’ institution. A Foreign Language Policy for its five regional campuses has been approved and is being implemented. According to the Pro Vice-Chancellor for Undergraduate Studies, Professor Justin Robinson, “Going forward, the expectation is that all UWI graduates will be at least conversation competent in a language other than English.”

Leading environmental health expert based at The UWI Mona, Dr. Henroy Scarlett has been installed as president of the International Federation of Environmental Health (IFEH). Dr. Scarlett is the first Jamaican and only Caribbean national to ever hold this global position as well as the third person in the region of the Americas to hold this position.

Smith, has been appointed a Trustee and Vice-Chair of the IAM-USA Foundation, headquartered in Washington D.C., U.S.A. A global organisation in nature, founded in 2020, the IAM-USA Foundation’s global mission and vision seek to empower the most vulnerable children and adults through self-esteem literacy, resiliency education, apprenticeship and social entrepreneurship training—building life skills and a healthy self-image.
 

UWI Researchers Co-uthor Landmark paper on Conducting Genomics Research in the Caribbean

Six academics from The University of the West Indies (The UWI) have co-authored a landmark paper that explores a framework for the ethical and socially acceptable conduct of genomics research in the Caribbean. The paper, prepared by Professors Donald Simeon, Simon Anderson, Dr. Lester Shields, Dr. Jasneth Mullings, Dr. Averell Bethelmy, Dr. Anna Kasafi Perkins and their US colleagues, Jyothsna Bolleddula and Professor Pilar Ossorio, is featured in The Lancet Regional Health-Americas, the world-leading public health journal focused on six regions of the world.

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) will welcome 16 outstanding global citizens to its graduation stage this year. In keeping with annual tradition across the five campuses, the University Council has approved conferral of the 16 at The UWI’s 2022 Graduation Ceremonies. The honorary graduands, recognised for their contributions to several areas including Sport, Culture, Law, Business, and Science will join the 2022 graduating class in-person this year, as a majority of campuses return to face-to-face ceremonies.
