The UWI Mona Campus hosts participants from  the ‘One Ocean Expedition’ research vessel

Participants aboard the Norwegian, Statsraad Lehmkuhl research vessel which docked at Jamaica’s Port Royal earlier this month, were hosted by The University of the West Indies (The UWI) Mona Campus on Tuesday, November 16, 2021.

The 33 visiting students and lecturers who are on the One Ocean Expedition led by University of Bergen (UiB), toured the Mona Campus’ Port Royal Marine Laboratory, then participated in an organised Knowledge Exchange Forum.

The 2020/2021 Awards, which marks the 28th year, will be held virtually—similar to last year’s ceremony—due to regional COVID-19 restrictions and protocols and will take the total number of awardees to 161.

UWI Students Aboard ‘One Ocean Expedition’ Research Vessel  Docking in Jamaica this Weekend

The Norwegian, Statsraad Lehmkuhl sail training vessel enters the English-speaking Caribbean leg of its historic 55,000-mile, ‘One Ocean Expedition’ this weekend.

On Saturday, November 13, the 107-year old, 98-metre long sail ship docks at Port Royal in Kingston, Jamaica. Onboard for this extraordinary research expedition, are two postgraduate researchers from The University of the West Indies (The UWI) Mona Campus, Chauntelle Green from the Department of Life Sciences and Deron Maitland from the Department of Physics.

The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus wishes to advise the public that the Undergraduate Applications for January 2022 Admission in some programmes are now open until November 22, 2021.

The University understands the many hurdles prospective students and their families have had to overcome due to changes within school communities island-wide and the unprecedented challenges presented by COVID-19. Further, with CSEC and CAPE results recently released, the Mona Campus has taken the decision to provide options for high school graduates to pursue further studies.

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) Open Campus recently launched Phase One of its partnership with UNESCO’s Transcultura Programme for persons from Spanish-speaking Caribbean countries.

The programme titled “Integrating Cuba, the Caribbean and the European Union through Culture and Creativity,” is being implemented in collaboration with UNESCO’s Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean and funded by the European Union.

Meet the Valedictorians: Xan-Xi Bethel

Xan-Xi Bethel

Xan-Xi Bethel is a product of the Simmons-Hall families from Middle Caicos in the Turks and Caicos Islands, and the Bonamy-Munnings-Woodside families of Andros and Cat Island in the Bahamas. She also comes out of the Sands, Adderley, Benebee, and Bethel families of Eleuthera and Long Island in the Bahamas. These were families that held fast to notions of belonging, nation building, and service. They were an industrious and ambitious people who worked and contributed as farmers, educators, scholars, sailors, businesspeople, suffragettes, and adventurers.
