Bridget Brereton is Professor of History, former President
of the Association of Caribbean Historians and former Deputy
Principal of the St. Augustine Campus of the UWI in Trinidad
& Tobago. She has written extensively in the areas of gender
and women’s studies in history. She is the author of Race
Relations in Colonial Trinidad (1979), A History of Modern Trinidad
(1991) and Law, Justice and Empire: The Colonial Career of John
Gorrie (1997). She co-edited (with Verene Shepherd & Barbara
Bailey) Engendering History (1995) and edited volume 5 of the
UNESCO General History of the Caribbean. (2000)
