Free Electives

These refer to courses (offered in this faculty or other departments /faculties) that students select to satisfy credit requirements for their current academic year. Students should ensure that their free electives are of the required level and credit weighting – level I, II or III/ three (3) credits.

Pre-requisites

These are courses that must be done before in order to be eligible to do another course. Most level II and III courses have pre-requisites as is indicated throughout this booklet. Some courses have more than one prerequisite. Hence, students need to ensure that they satisfy a course‟s prerequisites before registering for it.

Foundation Courses

All students registered in the University of the West Indies will be required to complete a minimum of nine (9) credits in Foundation Courses. These courses are Level I courses designed to promote sensitivity to and awareness of distinctive characteristic features of Caribbean cosmologies, identities and culture.

The Foundation courses are:

FOUN1013‐Critical Reading and Writing in the Social Sciences or

 

FOUN1019- Critical Reading and Writing in the Disciplines offered by the FHE

FOUN1101‐Caribbean Civilization offered by the FHE.

FOUN1201‐Science, Medicine & Technology in Society offered by FPAS.

FOUN1301‐Law, Governance, Economy and Society offered by FSS.

GOVT 1000- Introduction to Political Analysis offered by FSS.

 

Any other course approved for this purpose by the Board of Undergraduate Studies.

Students registered in the Faculty of Social Sciences are required to do FOUN1013, FOUN1101, and FOUN1201. However, if a student has not passed the English Language Proficiency Test (ELPT), he or she will need to do FOUN1019.

Notes

  • Students proposing to do postgraduate studies for the Master of Social Work (MSW) would need to take SOCI2006: Qualitative Methods in Sociological Research, as this will be a required pre-requisite for the Advanced Qualitative Research Methods course in the graduate programme. Students who have a strong interest and ability in conducting research which requires quantitative skills are advised to register for SOCI2008: Statistics for the Behavioural Sciences, as this will be a required pre-requisite for the Advanced Social Research Methods I course in the graduate programme.
