Dr. Patrick Prendergast is senior lecturer and Director of the Caribbean School of Media and Communication at The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus.
Prendergast joined the faculty at CARIMAC over two decades ago and has taught courses in Social Marketing, Communication Analysis and Planning, Communication Culture and Society, Understanding the Media, and Media, Gender and Popular Culture.
In August 2009 he was posted as Lecturer and CARIMAC Coordinator at The University of the West Indies, Mona – Western Jamaica Campus, Montego Bay, Jamaica, and on May 1, 2015 assumed duties as Campus Director before returning to CARIMAC Kingston as Director on August 1, 2024.
Prendergast has over three decades of local and international experience in the creative and cultural arts, teaching, and educational administration - spanning television production, programme design and planning, curriculum development, popular theatre, and community radio.
His areas of focus include community media and rural development, sustainable development, and issues of Caribbean masculinities and youth empowerment.
He is a member of the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR), The World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters (AMARC), and the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC).
Prendergast holds a Doctorate in Community Communication (University of Amsterdam), and graduate and undergraduate degrees in Social and Behaviour Change Communication, Social Marketing, and Television Production (University of the West Indies). He also holds a Diploma in Theatre Arts with a major in Directing and Community Drama (Jamaica School of Drama).
