Biography

Prof. Daniel Coore is Professor of Computer Science in the Department of Computing at the UWI, Mona. His primary research interests are in amorphous computing, robotics and automation, and computer science education. He teaches courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, spanning a broad range of areas including algorithms, theory of computation, computer architecture and cryptography. His teaching and research activities have exposed him to a broad cross-section of disciplines, particularly in Science, Engineering and Education, and he has a keen interest in the problems that exist at the boundaries between these disciplines. He is a co-inventor of the UWI Cardiac Surgery Simulator: a high-fidelity simulator that has had significant impact across the US in the training of cardiac surgeons. He is also a firm subscriber to the idea of using free and open source software wherever feasible.

Prof. Coore was born and raised in Jamaica, attending Mona Preparatory School, and Campion College. He attended UWI for one year, and then transferred to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he obtained in 1994, both the S.B. in Computer Science and Engineering and the S.M. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and in 1999 a Ph.D. in Computer Science. He is currently married with two children.
