This course introduces students to the input-output mode of thinking.  Students will be taught how to translate the everyday notions of cause and effect into input-output models. They will be required to study, understand and use a set of mathematical tools for describing and analyzing inputs and outputs and the relationships between them. It provides an exploration of signals and systems that develops continuous-time and discrete-time concepts/methods in parallel, while highlighting the similarities and differences. Introductory treatments of the applications of these basic methods in such areas as filtering, communication, sampling, discrete-time processing of continuous-time signals, and feedback are explored. The application of Laplace and Z Transforms and Fourier analysis using a mathematical software tool such as MATLAB are entrenched throughout the course. Read more
