On behalf of all staff of the Faculty of Engineering (FOE) of The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, I happily welcome all new and returning students for the 2020/2021 Academic Year. The UWI, Mona has been globally ranked by Times Higher Education to be in the top 4% of Universities globally. The BSc Electronics Engineering programme has received ABET International Accreditation and is now among the 4,144 programmes accredited by ABET, globally. The Faculty of Engineering at Mona is proud to be the only Faculty with an ABET accredited programme in Jamaica. All other engineering programmes within the faculty are currently being revised and will be submitted to ABET for similar accreditation.
As our student numbers keep trending up, this year promises a continuation of exciting events. Four Deputy Deans have been re-appointed to oversee undergraduate, graduate, outreach and quality assurance matters. Their roles and responsibilities are described in this booklet and may be used as a guide in seeking assistance to resolve any queries you may have. A Mona Engineering Society (MES) has been established by the Engineering student’s Guild and we expect that you will all participate in this society.
We are revitalizing and building upon the UWI’s strategic plan, which will ensure that the Faculty of Engineering remains on the path to global excellence. All indicators of success are on the rise. Our graduates are among those most demanded by industries. Our MPhil and PhD research activities commenced in 2018 and have been going well, with some students expected to complete their MPhil and PhDs during this academic year. The faculty will also be offering a new MSc in Engineering and Management programme, commencing this September 2020.
We continue to strengthen our partnerships with local and international industries and academia. New Fortress Energy now offers 10 scholarships valuing US$5,000 per year for qualifying students. Mona-Tech Engineering Services, the commercial arm of the Faculty of Engineering, has overseen the commissioning of a 7 Megawatt Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant for the Mona campus that is expected to dramatically reduce the campus’s energy costs. Engineering students have been and will continue to be granted internship opportunities at this facility.
We encourage your participation in the activities of the student engineering clubs (MES, JIE, IEEE, I-StructE) and also your support for our team preparing for the annual international robotics competition by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) South East USA. We have continued to excel in this competition and have won 3rd place on two occasions among 54 participating universities in South East USA. The Faculty of Engineering continues to work hard towards creating a Global hub for engineering teaching, research and practice; with strong synergies with our industrial, academic and commercial partners.
In recent time, life has changed dramatically for all of us. You may be understandably anxious about the future and we empathize with your challenges and you are constantly in our thoughts. To keep up with the changing dynamics of the current pandemic, our faculty, staff and administrators are in constant contact via online platforms, working diligently to ensure your success here at the UWI. Before long, life will return to normal. In the meantime, remain positive.
We wish you a very successful 2020/2021 academic year.
