BMS is the largest academic department on the Mona Campus with five Sections: Anatomy; Biochemistry; Pharmacology and Pharmacy/PharmD; Physical Therapy and Physiology. We also have a vibrant Forensic Science programme at the postgraduate level, and the adjunct Caribbean Genetics (CARIGEN) and Caribbean Toxicology (CARITOX) business arms. More recently, we have been involved in medicinal Cannabis research.
Our vision is to be a multidisciplinary Department promoting excellence in teaching and research in Basic Medical Sciences at the regional and international levels.
Our mission is to advance student development by improving the quality of teaching and to foster biomedical research and its dissemination at the Caribbean level and beyond.
Welcome to the Department of Basic Medical Sciences (BMS) our department offers courses in nine (9) undergraduate and twenty-one (21) postgraduate degrees to students in the Faculties of Medical Sciences and Science & Technology. The excellent work of our academics is well supported by a competent cadre of technical, administrative and service staff. The breadth of our research and scholarship span the disciplines and sub-disciplines of the sections and the dynamism is evidenced by the international, regional and national accolades of many staff, both present and past.

The BMS department offers degrees in Basic Medical Sciences, covering the specialities of Anatomy, Pharmacology and physiology. The department offers a 5 year professional Doctor of Pharmacy programme which produces certified pharmacist. Additionally, we offer a 3 year Bachelor of Science in physical therapy degree which equips its graduates to deliver quality health care.
