Mentor Bio - Prof Maxine Gossell-Williams

Professor of Pharmacology and Pharmacovigilance in the Faculty of Medical Sciences at The University of the West Indies in Jamaica. She has served as primary supervisor for over forty graduate research projects, many of which fostered collaboration across clinical disciplines. She has over twenty years of significant contribution to curriculum development and currently holds the position of Coordinator for Masters and PhD programmes in the Faculty. She is also a member of the Board of Graduate Studies and Research and the University Library Advisory Committee.

Her main area of research relates to evaluation of drug efficacy and safety. Some of her project areas include adverse drug events patterns in specific patient groups, the impact of marijuana on drug therapy, drug induced metabolic syndrome, efficacy of androgen depravation therapy in patients with castrate resistance prostate cancer, impact of prenatal lithium exposure on memory consolidation, adverse drug effects in patients on antihypertensive therapy and evaluation of warfarin therapy.

She is a two-time winner of the Principal’s Best Research Publication, as well as previous winner of the Dean’s prize for best poster presentation at Faculty of Medical Sciences Annual Conference. She also holds the title Fulbright Scholar awarded in 2004, which facilitated her post-doctoral work at the University of North Carolina.

Her professional expertise extends nationally, regionally and globally, including previously serving on Ministry of Health Central Drug and Therapeutic Committee, the Pharmacy Advisory Committee of the University of Technology and the CARICOM Marijuana Commission. Currently she is an Honorary Member of the Pharmaceutical Society of Jamaica, a member of the Executive Committee of the North America Chapter of the International Society of Pharmacovigilance and a member of American Society of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics. Professor Gossell-Williams is also an editorial board member of Frontiers in Pharmacology and the International Journal of Risk and Safety in Medicine.
