What We Do in the Department of Pathology

The Department of Pathology consists of three sub-departments, representing three distinct but related medical specialities, namely Anatomical Pathology, Chemical Pathology and Haematology/Oncology. Through the operation of its various laboratories and units, each sub-department provides a high standard of undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, produces impactful research and offers first-class clinical laboratory services.

A state-of-the-art department providing a high standard of teaching and clinical laboratory service and producing excellent quality applied research for the Caribbean and beyond.
To produce high-quality medical graduates, accurate clinical laboratory reports and novel research on disease in Caribbean populations, thus facilitating quality care and potential development of tailored treatment strategies for Caribbean patients.

The Department of Pathology is dedicated to pioneering advancements in medical science through a blend of high-quality education, innovative research, and first-class clinical laboratory services. Our goal is to improve patient care across the Caribbean by facilitating tailored treatment strategies based on our research. The department operates several state-of-the-art biomedical laboratories and units that support research, education, and clinical diagnostics.



We achieve this by:

Conducting impactful research on diseases affecting Caribbean populations.
Providing immersive education and training for undergraduate and postgraduate medical students.
Delivering high-standard clinical laboratory services through specialized units like chemical pathology, cytology, and haematology.

Staff and Faculty

Our department is equipped with over 30 members of staff who are trained and committed to providing excellence in teaching and learning, research and in the execution of their clinical duties. Our biomedical laboratories include services such as Chemical Pathology, Cytogentics, Cytology, Flow Cytometry, Haematology and Histology. We also have other services and units such as Autopsy Services, Blood Bank and Jamaica Cancer Registry.  

 

 

Academic Programmes

Undergraduate Overview

We offer a 10 week clinical clerkship called MDSC4010 - Pathology & Microbiology Clerkship delivered jointly with the Department of Microbiology to year 4 students pursuing the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree at The University of the West Indies Mona.

Graduate Overview

Our department offers a wide range of programmes from postgraduate courses, Masters of Philosophy (Mphil) and Doctor of Philosophy (Phd) and Doctor of Medicine (DM). We offer a Postgraduate Pathology course (MDSC6029) offered to postgraduate students pursuing Doctor of Medicine (DM) degrees in Pathology, Chemical Pathology, Haematology/Medical Oncology and Surgery (Part I). Our Mphil, Phd and DM degrees offered are :

Doctor of Medicine in Chemical Pathology
Doctor of Medicine in Haematology and Medical Oncology
Doctor of Medicine in Pathology
MPhil and Phd in Chemical Pathology
