Synopsis:
This study highlights the increased cardiovascular risks in overweight/obese female school learners in an understudied region of South Africa. There were higher proportions of pre-hypertension, hypertension, and low-grade inflammation in overweight/obese participants in comparison with their lean participants.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To examine the relationship of serum magnesium and high-sensitive C-reactive proteins (hsCRPs) with overweight/obesity, and its association with hypertension in lean versus overweight/obese (O/O), female, adolescent school learners living in Mthatha, Eastern Cape, South Africa.
