Hearing Evaluation in Children with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus

Synopsis: 
The study investigated the hearing functions of children with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus. Tympanogram, pure tone audiogram, and transient evoked otoacoustic emission tests were performed to all subjects. According to the PTA results, mean hearing threshold values were found significantly higher in children with Type 1 diabetes compared to the control group. We recommend that Type 1 diabetic children should be kept under monitoring in terms of hearing functions.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Diabetes is a metabolic syndrome characterized by hyperglycemia deriving from a defect in insulin secretion, insulin effect, or both. Varying levels of hearing loss may occur in patients with Type 1 diabetes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the hearing functions of children with Type 1 diabetes mellitus. At the same time, we also intended to examine the relationship between hearing loss and age at onset of diabetes, duration of diabetes and HbA1c levels.

Self-reported Hearing Loss Associated with Frailty among Afro-Caribbeans

This paper investigated the relationship between self-reported hearing loss and frailty in four ethnic groups. Self-reported hearing loss was found to be associated with frailty among Afro-Caribbeans, and this association was largely due to the frailty criterion of exhaustion.

Hearing Abnormalities in Patients with Osteoarthritis

In conclusion, significant differences in the pure-tone average values and hearing thresholds at 4000-12500 Hz detected in patients with osteoarthritis demonstrate involvement of the functions of the inner ear.

Objective: This study was designed to compare the prevalence of hearing abnormalities between the patients with osteoarthritis (OA) and an age and gender-matched control group without OA.
