Obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) is a sleep-related respiratory disorder that increases the risk of several other diseases. We evaluated the mode of action of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), which is the treatment of choice, in OSAHS therapy. The results of this study reveal that CPAP acts by reducing the levels of cystatin C and leptin in the serum which are involved in raising the basal metabolic rate in OSAHS.

Objective: To evaluate the effects of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) on serum cystatin C and leptin concentration levels in patients with obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS).
