On Friday (November 26), Huawei hosted a graduation ceremony for Jamaican university students, including twelve (12) from The University of the West Indies (The UWI), who participated in this year’s staging of the Huawei Seeds for the Future programme. The online programme, which lasted eight days, consisted of mandatory online courses, live stream sessions, a ‘Tech4Good’ project and unlimited access to discovering Huawei, advanced technologies, trending businesses and cultural awareness. Eleven (11) students from the Faculty of Science and Technology and one (1) from the Faculty of Engineering represented The UWI. Shemar Jones (FST) emerged as the top student from The UWI and one of the top students overall. Speaking about his experience, Shamar noted “Overall, the Seeds for the Future is an amazing programme. It’s a fun interactive online experience that expanded my knowledge on the topic of ICT and how much of an impact Huawei has made in that sector.” Shemar, along with FST’s Lois-Anne Hall and Rasheed Senior were also part of a ten person Jamaican team that submitted the winning ‘Tech4Good’ project proposal focussing on using ICT to facilitate better waste collection in Jamaica. All three were also among five (5) UWI prize and scholarship recipients. The overall participating class for this year, consisted of a total of 112 students, from Ghana (58), Jamaica (29), Trinidad and Tobago (20) and Suriname (5). At the event The Huawei/UWI ICT Talent Hub initiative was also formalized with the signing of an MOU. The event was attended by Bob Zhou, Huawei Jamaica CEO, parliamentarian Juliet Holness, Chinese Ambassador to Jamaica Tian Qi, representatives from the Ministry of Education Youth and Information, and from UTech, Ja.
