Dean’s Message

Congratulations on your journey so far and welcome to the Faculty of Humanities and Education (FHE).

This is an exciting time and we are delighted that you have chosen to join us as part of your academic and professional journey. We are looking forward to your participation and involvement especially as we celebrate 75 years of intellectual leadership, scholarship, cultural influence, and educational excellence.

Our graduate and undergraduate programmes are designed to cultivate twenty-first skills through eight interdependent departments in Cultural Studies, Education, History and Archaeology, Language, Linguistics and Philosophy, Library and Information Studies, Literatures in English, Media and Communication, and Modern Languages. As such, our alumni represent the best of Caribbean professionals as educators, journalists, writers, policymakers, entrepreneurs, advocates and nation-builders. You are now a part of this legacy!

This is an exciting time to be studying in the Humanities and Education, with generative and adaptive AI removing traditional single-subject disciplinary boundaries, there are new challenges, but also extraordinary opportunities. We encourage you to pursue innovative interdisciplinary studies and research that incorporate rapidly changing - technologies, communications, pedagogies, cultures, and philosophies. Importantly, your studies with us will become part of the body work that addresses the pressing and evolving problems in the small-island states of the Caribbean.

We urge you to engage in our vibrant intellectual and creative community, to participate in workshops and seminars, to talk to your lecturers, to support and join the guild, to get involved in clubs and societies, to join graduate and undergraduate academic and professional networks, to pursue collaboration, and to publish your work.

This year as we continue to celebrate our 75th anniversary, we honour the past and courageously step into the future. We recommit ourselves to academic excellence, social justice, and the transformation of our society through education and innovation. We are grateful for the contributions of every student, faculty member, administrative and ancillary staff member, and of course our alumni.  We are excited to start building the next 75 years with you!

Welcome again, and may this academic year be for you one of growth, discovery, and lasting impact.
