Blood Drive
The University of the West Indies in partnership with the National Blood Transfusion Service is hosting another blood collection drive on Tuesday, November 28 from 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. in the Assembly Hall, UWI, Mona Campus.
This Blood Drive is in response to the dire need of the country’s medical facilities for blood. This is a crisis which really affects every Jamaican. The University Health Centre invites everyone to help by giving the gift of Love, give blood this holiday season.
Byron Robertson
The University of the West Indies expresses sincere condolence to the family and friends of Byron Robertson, former University Registrar who died on Tuesday, November 21, 2006.
Centre for Gender and Development Studies
The Centre for Gender and Development Studies, Mona Unit, will host two events addressing gender related issues. A panel discussion entitled “Conversations With Gender” will be held on Tuesday, November 28 Library at 11:00 a.m. in the Multifunctional Room of the Main. Mary Clarke, Children’s Advocate and Chief Justice Desiree Bernard will form part of the panel to discuss the emerging gender and development issues and the law.
Foreign Language Assistants Programme in France
The Embassy of France is allocating positions to Jamaican English Language Assistant each academic year in the mainland of France as well as in the Guadeloupe and Martinique.
The programme aims to allow Jamaican foreign assistants to master the French language and customs while providing French students with the authenticity of their language and the richness of their culture.
This programme is open to Jamaican professionals and students aged 20 to 30. All candidates should have the equivalent of an Associate Degree and a fair knowledge of spoken French.
Inside Hillview High School: An Ethnographic Study of an Urban Jamaican School
The UWI Press has recently published Inside Hillview High School: An Ethnographic Study of an Urban Jamaican School by Hyacinth Evans. It is a detailed case study of a Jamaican high school, formerly known as a junior secondary high school. Evans’s research demonstrates the continuing education problem encountered by students and teachers in a two-tiered educational system.
Japanese Foundation Donates Books to UWI
The Embassy of Japan has donated books valued at 92, 300 Yen to the Department of Modern Languages and Literature, University of the West Indies. The books have been donated under the Programme for the Donation of Japanese Language Teaching Materials for the 2006 fiscal year. The books will be received in a Handing Over Ceremony to be held on Monday, November 27 at 2:00 p.m. in Conference Room 1, UWI, Mona.
Kuumba
On Wednesday & Thursday, November 29 & 30 the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts (PSCCA) will host KUUMBA (creativity). This is the Art/Craft Market Place held on the lawns of the Centre from 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. each day.
Institutions such as School of Hope (plants and craft items) and Sir John Golding Rehabilitation Centre's Monex Department (craft items) will be at the Market Place.
Mervyn Morris Launches New Book of Selected Poems
The Department of Literatures in English presents the Launch of Mervyn Morris’ “I been there, sort of”- New and Selected Poems on December 3 at 11:00 a.m. at the Phillip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts. The event will feature book presentations to the National Library of Jamaica and the UWI, Main Library. There will also be dramatic presentations of select Mervyn Morris poems such as: “Short Story” by Kei Miller, “Proposition One” by Tanya Shirley and Karl Williams, “Operation” by Carolyn Allen and “Stripper by Michael Bucknor. Mona School of Business Awards Ceremony
This year just under a hundred and sixty graduates of the University of the West Indies are from the Mona School of Business. The Mona School of Business also boasts an excellent Diploma Programme which sees approximately 35 students graduating each year.
Professorial Inaugural Lecture Series
The Faculty of Social Sciences, UWI, Mona hosts its first presentation in its Professorial Inaugural Lecture in which Professor Brian Meeks from the Department of Government will present on the topic, “Imagining the Future: Rethinking the Political in Jamaica” This event takes place on November 28, 2006 at 6 p.m. at the Undercroft, UWI.
